Question 270: What is the ruling on taking a charm (hirz) of Imam Ridha or others, or verses like 'Inni Yakad', into the toilet?

Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
A man came to our master Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) and said: 'O my master, I am afraid of the governor of the city of Jazira, and I fear that my enemies will introduce me to him, and I do not feel safe for my life.' The Imam said: 'Make a ring with a Chinese steel (hadid sini) stone and engrave three lines on it:
and on the underside of the stone, two lines:
and on the sides of the stone, on its edges, engrave:
Wear it when any of your needs are difficult for you, and when you fear harm from any person, wear it, for your needs will be fulfilled and your fears will be removed. Likewise, when a woman's childbirth is difficult, hang it on the woman, for she will give birth by the will of Allah Almighty. And similarly, for one who is afflicted by the evil eye, it will be removed. And be careful with it from impurity, grease, and entering the bathhouse and the toilet, and keep it safe, for it is one of the secrets of Allah Almighty and His protection.'
📚Mustadrak, Vol. 1, p. 299
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 56
Translation: Abu Ayyub said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'I enter the toilet while I am wearing a ring on which there is one of the names of Allah Almighty (should I do this)?' The Imam said: 'No, and do not have intercourse with (such a ring) on either.'
📚Qurb al-Isnad, p. 121
Translation: Ali ibn Ja'far said: 'I asked Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) about a person who has intercourse and enters the toilet while he has a ring with the name of Allah or something from the Quran on it (and in his hand), is this permissible?' He said: 'No.'
✅In case a person, for any reason, takes such a ring with them into the toilet, they should act according to the following narration:
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 474
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever has the name of Allah engraved on his ring should turn it (to his other hand) inside the toilet from the hand he uses for purification (i.e., from the left hand).' (and put it on his right hand).
✅Shaykh Saduq wrote in his book 'Hidayah', p. 77:
Translation: 'It is disliked for a person to enter the toilet while he has with him a piece of paper on which there is Quran.'
✅Shaykh Saduq states at the beginning of his book 'Al-Muqni' that all the contents of this book are narrations, except that he has omitted their chains of transmission, but he does not mention such a thing at the beginning of the book 'Hidayah,' although Saduq's practice was to issue fatwas based on the content of the narrations. This matter, however, is not based on a specific narration from the Ahl al-Bayt, but given Shaykh Saduq's method, it is necessary to exercise caution in this matter, especially since no conflicting narrations have been reported.
✅In a general summary, it is observed that we are commanded not to take into the toilet a Chinese steel (hadid sini) ring that contains remembrances (adhkar) and other rings that have the remembrance of God or a verse from the Quran engraved on them. For rings other than Chinese steel, if for any reason we happen to take them with us, we should move them from the left hand. As for a paper containing Quran, based on the statement of Shaykh Saduq in the book 'Hidayah,' which is likely the content of a narration from the Ahl al-Bayt, we should be cautious and avoid it as a disliked act.
✅However, regarding other amulets and charms, such as the charm of Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) and the charm of Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) that a person wears, since no prohibition has been reported from the Ahl al-Bayt, they are unrestricted, and there is no problem in taking them with you, unless it is a specific case for which there is a narration prohibiting taking it into the toilet.
