Question 1724: At what age should children's dormitories be separated?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 436
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father and ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Boys and boys, and boys and girls, and girls and girls, should be separated in dormitories from the age of ten.
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 436
Sheikh Saduq said: It is narrated that at the age of six, children's dormitories should be separated.
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 439, Hadith 30
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that they said: There should be separation between women and children in dormitories when children reach the age of ten.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 7, p. 69
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: A child's teeth fall out at seven years old, they are commanded to pray at nine, separation in dormitories occurs at ten, they reach puberty at fourteen, their height reaches its peak at twenty-one, and their intellect reaches its peak at twenty-eight, apart from experiences!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 47
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Between boys and women, when they reach the age of ten, separation should occur in dormitories.
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the dormitories of boys with boys, boys with girls, girls with girls, and boys with women should be separated once these children reach the age of ten lunar years and should not sleep together under the same blanket.
However, in Hadith 2⃣, Sheikh Saduq mentioned that this separation should occur at the age of six, but in other narrations, the age of ten lunar years is mentioned, which is when the child reaches the age of nine lunar years and enters the tenth year, which is approximately 8 years and 9 months solar.
Based on this, two children who have reached the age of 8 years and 9 months solar should not sleep in the same dormitory under one blanket, and parents and those around them are obligated to implement this instruction and separate their dormitories from this age onward.
✅ The purpose of separating dormitories is not that they sleep in different rooms, but rather to prevent them from sleeping together under one blanket.
