Question 1708: What is the ruling for looking in a mirror and using video calls in a way that a person sees their own image on the phone screen while in the state of Ihram?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 302
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not look in the mirror while in the state of Ihram, because it is considered adornment!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 302

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 356
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not look in the mirror while in the state of Ihram, because it is considered adornment!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 357
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: A person in Ihram should not look in the mirror for adornment; if they do, they should say Talbiyah!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 1, p. 68
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Verily, matters are of three kinds:
1. Matters whose guidance is clear, and they are followed.
2. Matters whose misguidance is clear, and they are avoided.
3. Matters that are complex (ambiguous), and their knowledge is referred to Allah and His Messenger.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: There is clear halal (permissible) and clear haram (forbidden), and there are ambiguous matters between them.
So, whoever avoids the ambiguous matters will be saved from the harams, and whoever acts upon the ambiguous matters will fall into the harams and will perish from where they do not know!
And then, at the end of the narration, he said: Stopping at the ambiguous matters is better than suddenly falling into destruction!
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 4, p. 74
Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said in a narration: There is clear halal and clear haram, and between them are ambiguous matters. So, whoever avoids what is unclear to them regarding sin will avoid what is clear to them, and sins are within the forbidden limits of Allah. Therefore, whoever grazes around them is close to falling into them!
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, one of the matters that a person in Ihram must avoid is looking in the mirror, as it is considered adornment in the aforementioned narrations, and it is not permissible for someone in Ihram.
✅ According to narration 4, if a person in Ihram looks in the mirror, they should say Talbiyah.
✅ Regarding the use of the front camera of a mobile phone or video calls, where a live and moving image of the person appears on the screen, although looking at these images cannot be definitively classified as part of the prohibitions on looking in the mirror for someone in Ihram, based on narrations such as narration 5 and 6, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have instructed us to avoid ambiguity. Therefore, a person in Ihram should refrain from looking at their own image on the phone screen to avoid falling into Allah's prohibitions unknowingly. After asking an Imam for a ruling in such cases, the exact obligation for the person will be clarified, InshaAllah.
✅ The above narrations apply equally to both men and women.
