Question 1694: What is the sequence of rituals on the Day of Eid al-Adha?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 470

Ishaq bin Ammar said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): What is the most preferred time for you to leave from Muzdalifah (to Mina)? He said: A little before sunrise, as this is the most preferred time for me. I asked: What if we stay until the sun rises? He said: It is not a problem!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 473

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said about someone who stays in Muzdalifah with the people and then leaves before the people move (toward Mina): If they are ignorant, nothing is required of them. But if they leave intentionally before dawn, they must sacrifice a sheep!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 470

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not pass through the Valley of Muhassir until the sun rises!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 491

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Eid al-Adha, when you stone the Jamrat (the large pillar), then purchase your sacrificial animal!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 498

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: In Mina, before shaving your head, begin by slaughtering your sacrificial animal!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 240

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When you slaughter your sacrificial animal, shave your head, perform Ghusl (ritual washing), trim your nails, and shorten your mustache!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, pilgrims stay in Muzdalifah until dawn. After dawn, it is preferred that they leave slightly before sunrise toward Mina, ensuring that by the time they pass through the Valley of Muhassir (which is between Muzdalifah and Mina), the sun has already risen.

✅ Therefore, pilgrims remain in the area of Muzdalifah from dawn until sunrise, which is defined by the area between the Me'azamein mountain, Hiyadh, and the Valley of Muhassir. After sunrise, they move from the Valley of Muhassir toward Mina.

Of course, according to narration 1⃣, if they leave after sunrise, it is not a problem. However, they should not intentionally leave before dawn. If they intentionally leave before dawn and are not among those permitted to leave at night, they must atone by sacrificing a sheep.

Some of the individuals permitted to leave toward Mina at night can be found at this link:

✅ According to the above narrations and others, after the pilgrims move from Muzdalifah to Mina, they perform their rituals in the following order:

2. Perform the sacrifice

3. Shave the head
