Question 1701: When should the shaving of the head be done during Hajj, and can one suffice with shortening the hair (Taqseer) instead of shaving?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 240

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When you slaughter your sacrificial animal, shave your head, trim your nails, and shorten your mustache!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 502

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: For someone performing their first Hajj, it is appropriate to shave their head, and if they have performed Hajj before, they may either shorten their hair or shave it. However, if their hair is tied, braided, or knotted, it is obligatory for them to shave their head and they cannot simply shorten it!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 484

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: If a man has braided or tied his hair during Hajj or Umrah, it is obligatory for him to shave his head!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 503

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: It is the responsibility of someone performing their first Hajj to shave their head and not to shorten their hair. Shortening the hair is for those who have completed their obligatory Hajj!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 243

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Someone performing their first Hajj cannot shorten their hair, and it is obligatory for them to shave their head!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 474

Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) in a narration said: Women perform Taqseer (shortening part of their hair), while men shave their heads, and if a man has performed Hajj before, he may perform Taqseer if he wishes!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 390

Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Shaving the head is not obligatory for women, and Taqseer (shortening part of the hair) is their responsibility!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 157

Abdullah bin Sanan said: I heard Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: The Tawaf of the Mut’ami is that they make Tawaf of the Ka’bah, perform the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and perform Taqseer (shorten their hair). After doing this, they exit from the state of Ihram!

✅ Based on narration 9⃣ and others, women and men performing the Umrah Tamattu’ are required to perform Taqseer, i.e., to shorten part of their hair, after performing the obligatory Tawaf and the prayer of Tawaf, as well as the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. They should not shave their hair.

✅ Also, according to the above narrations and others, shaving or shortening part of the hair during Hajj is done after the sacrifice on the day of Eid al-Adha.

✅ If a man is performing his first Hajj and has not performed Hajj before, it is his responsibility to shave his head, and he is not allowed to shorten or perform Taqseer on his hair.

✅ Also, a man who has tied, braided, or glued his hair together due to some substance must shave his head; shortening or Taqseer is not allowed for him.

✅ Women are only required to perform Taqseer and are not allowed to shave their hair under any circumstances.

✅ A man who is allowed to perform Taqseer in Hajj or Umrah, the narrations indicate that shaving the head is better than Taqseer for him. (📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 453, Hadith 2948, and 📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 243, Hadith 822, etc.)
