Question 1685: Can a person in Ihram trim their nails?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 61

Hammad said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about preparing for Ihram; the Imam said: Cutting nails, trimming the mustache, and shaving the hair above the private parts.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 360

Isaaq ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about a person who forgets to trim their nails when they enter Ihram; the Imam said: Let them leave it alone.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 228

Muawiya ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person in Ihram whose nails grow long or one of them breaks, causing them discomfort; the Imam said: If they can, they should leave it alone. But if it bothers them, they can trim it, and for each nail, they should give a handful of food as charity.

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 333

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: If someone cuts their nails due to forgetfulness, ignorance, or negligence, nothing is required of them. But if they do it intentionally, then they must offer a sacrifice (blood).

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 227

Abu Basir said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who cuts one of their nails while in Ihram; the Imam said: They must give one mud (of food) for each nail until they reach ten nails. If they cut all the nails of both hands, they must offer a sacrifice of one sheep.

I asked: What if they cut all the nails of both their hands and feet? He said: If they do it in one sitting, they must offer one sheep; if they do it in two sittings, they must offer two sheep.

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 332

Halabi asked the Imam about a person who cuts their nails; the Imam said: For each finger, they must give one mud (of food), and if they cut all ten nails, they must offer one sheep as a sacrifice.

✅ Based on the above narrations, one of the etiquettes of Ihram is that a person should first cut their nails before entering Ihram, and once in Ihram, they should not cut their nails. Even if their nails grow long, they should leave them as they are until they exit Ihram.

✅ If a person in Ihram cuts their nails due to forgetfulness, distraction, or ignorance, according to narration 4, nothing is required of them.

✅ If the nails of a person in Ihram break or grow in a way that causes them discomfort, they are permitted to trim them but must give a handful of food (wheat, dates, rice, etc.) for each nail as charity.

✅ If a person in Ihram intentionally cuts fewer than ten nails, they must give one mud of food for each nail to a poor person. However, if they intentionally cut all the nails of both hands, they must offer one sheep as a sacrifice.

✅ If they trim the nails of both hands and both feet in one sitting, they must offer one sheep as a sacrifice; if they do it in two sittings, they must offer two sheep.
