Question 1667: What is the *Dhikr Yunusiyah*?

✅ Answer: The term *Dhikr Yunusiyah* does not appear in narrations. It refers to the supplication of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) mentioned in the Quran:

✅ قال اللَّهُ تَعَالَی : وَ ذَا النُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَیْهِ فَنَادَی فِی الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَکَ إِنِّی کُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِین

Translation: And remember Dhu al-Nun (i.e., Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him), when he left in anger, thinking that We would not impose hardship on him. (But when he ended up in the belly of a great fish), he cried out in the darkness: 'There is no deity except You. Glory be to You! Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.'

✅ The supplication or dhikr *'Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu mina al-ẓālimīn'* is narrated within various supplications from the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them). To understand its specific and independent context, consider the following two narrations:

1⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: I am amazed at one who fears something yet does not seek refuge in four phrases:

I am amazed at one who is afraid, yet does not seek refuge in this divine statement (in Surah Al-Imran, Verse 173): *'Hasbunallāh wa ni‘ma al-wakīl'* ('Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs'). For I heard Allah, glorified and exalted, say thereafter: *'So they returned with Allah’s favor and bounty; no harm touched them.'*

I am amazed at one who is overcome with grief and does not seek refuge in this divine statement (in Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 87): *'Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu mina al-ẓālimīn'* ('There is no deity except You! Glory be to You! Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers'). For Allah said: *'So We answered his call and saved him from distress. Thus, We save the believers.'*

I am amazed at one who is deceived yet does not seek refuge in this divine statement (in Surah Ghafir, Verse 44): *'Wa ufaḍḍu amrī ilā Allāh inna Allāha baṣīrun bil-‘ibād'* ('I entrust my affair to Allah. Surely, Allah is All-Seeing of His servants'). For I heard Allah, glorified and exalted, say: *'So Allah protected him from the evil of what they plotted.'*

I am amazed at one who desires the world and its adornments yet does not seek refuge in this divine statement (in Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 39): *'Mā shā' Allāh lā quwwata illā billāh'* ('Whatever Allah wills [happens]! There is no power except with Allah').

2⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The supplication of the distressed, the helpless, and those struck by calamity is this: *'Lā ilāha illā anta subḥānaka innī kuntu mina al-ẓālimīn.'* He should recite it on the eve of Friday after completing the obligatory prayer of Isha.

The Imam said: I learned this from Imam Baqir (peace be upon him), who said he learned it from Imam Zainul Abidin (peace be upon him), who learned it from Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), who learned it from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), who learned it from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), who received it from Jibril (peace be upon him) from Allah, the Exalted.
