1⃣عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّه عَنِ الرَّجُلِ یُصَلِّی وَ الْمَرْأَةُ بِحِذَاهُ عَنْ یَمِینِهِ أَوْ عَنْ یَسَارِهِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ إِذَا کَانَتْ لَا تُصَلِّی.

Abdulrahman says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man praying while a woman is opposite him, either on his right or left. Imam replied: If she is not praying, there is no problem!

2⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ یُصَلِّی فِی زَاوِیَةِ الْحُجْرَةِ وَ امْرَأَتُهُ أَوِ ابْنَتُهُ تُصَلِّی بِحِذَاهُ فِی الزَّاوِیَةِ الْأُخْرَی قَالَ لَا یَنْبَغِی ذَلِکَ فَإِنْ کَانَ بَیْنَهُمَا شِبْرٌ أَجْزَأَهُ یَعْنِی إِذَا کَانَ الرَّجُلُ مُتَقَدِّماً لِلْمَرْأَةِ بِشِبْرٍ.

Muhammad ibn Muslim says: I asked Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) about a man praying in one corner of a room and his wife or daughter praying opposite him in another corner. Imam replied: This is not appropriate, and if there is a distance of one span between them, it is sufficient. That is, if the man is one span ahead of the woman!

3⃣عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ وَ الْمَرْأَةِ یُصَلِّیَانِ جَمِیعاً فِی بَیْتٍ الْمَرْأَةُ عَنْ یَمِینِ الرَّجُلِ بِحِذَاهُ قَالَ لَا حَتَّی یَکُونَ بَیْنَهُمَا شِبْرٌ أَوْ ذِرَاعٌ أَوْ نَحْوُهُ.

Abu Basir says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man and a woman both praying in one room, with the woman opposite the man on his right. Imam replied: No! Until there is a distance of one span or one arm's length or something similar between them!

4⃣عَنِ الْفُضَیْلِ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَر قَالَ: إِنَّمَا سُمِّیَتْ مَکَّةُ بَکَّةَ لِأَنَّهُ یَبْتَکُّ فِیهَا الرِّجَالُ وَ النِّسَاءُ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ تُصَلِّی بَیْنَ یَدَیْکَ وَ عَنْ یَمِینِکَ وَ عَنْ یَسَارِکَ وَ مَعَکَ وَ لَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِکَ وَ إِنَّمَا یُکْرَهُ فِی سَائِرِ الْبُلْدَان

📚 *Al-'Ilal al-Shara'i, p. 397*

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Mecca is called Bakkah because men and women crowd in it, and a woman prays opposite you, on your right, left, or with you, and there is no issue with it. However, this is disliked in other cities!

5⃣عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَر قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَرْأَةِ تُصَلِّی عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ فَقَالَ لَا تُصَلِّی الْمَرْأَةُ بِحِیَالِ الرَّجُلِ إِلَّا أَنْ یَکُونَ قُدَّامَهَا وَ لَوْ بِصَدْرِهِ.

Zurarah says: I asked Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) about a woman praying in front of a man. Imam replied: A woman does not pray directly in line with a man unless the man is ahead of her, even if it is with his chest!

6⃣عَنْ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ یَسْتَقِیمُ لَهُ أَنْ یُصَلِّیَ وَ بَیْنَ یَدَیْهِ امْرَأَةٌ تُصَلِّی قَالَ لَا یُصَلِّی حَتَّی یَجْعَلَ بَیْنَهُ وَ بَیْنَهَا أَکْثَرَ مِنْ عَشَرَةِ أَذْرُعٍ وَ إِنْ کَانَتْ عَنْ یَمِینِهِ وَ عَنْ یَسَارِهِ جَعَلَ بَیْنَهُ وَ بَیْنَهَا مِثْلَ ذَلِکَ فَإِنْ کَانَتْ تُصَلِّی خَلْفَهُ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ إِنْ کَانَتْ تُصِیبُ ثَوْبَهُ وَ إِنْ کَانَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ قَاعِدَةً أَوْ نَائِمَةً أَوْ قَائِمَةً فِی غَیْرِ صَلَاةٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ حَیْثُ کَانَتْ.

I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man praying while a woman is in front of him. Imam replied: He should not pray until there is a distance of more than ten arms' length (about 5 meters) between them. If she is to his right or left, the same amount of distance should be kept. If she is behind him, there is no problem, even if her clothes touch him. If the woman is not praying, sitting, lying, or standing, there is no issue no matter where she is!

7⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ فِی الْمَرْأَةِ تُصَلِّی عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ قَالَ إِذَا کَانَ بَیْنَهُمَا حَاجِزٌ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said about a woman praying in front of a man: If there is a curtain or barrier between them, there is no problem!

8⃣عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِیهِ ع قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ هَلْ یَصْلُحُ لَهُ أَنْ یُصَلِّیَ فِی مَسْجِدٍ قَصِیرِ الْحَائِطِ وَ امْرَأَته قَائِمَةٌ تُصَلِّی بِحِیَالِهِ وَ هُوَ یَرَاهَا وَ تَرَاهُ قَالَ إِنْ کَانَ بَیْنَهُمَا حَائِطٌ طَوِیلٌ أَوْ قَصِیرٌ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

Ali ibn Ja'far says: I asked Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) about a man praying in a mosque with a short wall while his wife is standing opposite him praying, and they can see each other. Imam replied: If there is a short or tall wall between them, there is no issue!

9⃣عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ وَ الْمَرْأَةِ یُصَلِّیَانِ مَعاً فِی الْمَحْمِلِ قَالَ لَا وَ لَکِنْ یُصَلِّی الرَّجُلُ وَ تُصَلِّی الْمَرْأَةُ بَعْدَهُ.

Abu Basir says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man and a woman praying together in a litter. Imam replied: No! But the man should pray first, and then the woman prays afterward!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, except for the city of Mecca, simultaneous prayer of a man and a woman is prohibited if the woman is opposite and in line with him, either on his right, left, or ahead of him. The man must be at least ahead of the woman by his chest or one span or more. However, if there is a barrier such as a curtain or a wall (short or tall), or if the distance between them is more than ten arms' length (about 5 meters), there is no issue with the woman being ahead of the man or being aligned with him in prayer.

✅ If the woman is not praying, no matter where she is, it does not affect the man's prayer.

✅ From narrations 2⃣ and others, it is clear that there is no difference between a mahram and a non-mahram woman. Even if the woman is his daughter or wife, the above rulings apply.

✅ The way to avoid the trial of non-shari'ah adhan is to refer to the related narrations, learn the criteria from them, and perform the adhan and prayer according to those narrations, not by consulting with the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University or the Egypt Study Center or the Al-Muqarrar Institute in Mecca or the Muslim World Club or the Lou'a Institute in Qom or the Karachi University of Islamic Sciences or the North America Islamic Society!
