It was asked of Imam Baqir (peace be upon him): From what age is the prayer for the deceased obligatory for a child? He said: When they understand prayer and are six years old!

Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) would say in the prayer for a deceased child (after the fourth takbir):

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لِأَبَوَیْهِ وَ لَنَا سَلَفاً وَ فَرَطاً وَ أَجْراً.

Meaning: O Allah! Make them a forerunner for us and their parents, and a source of reward!

5 عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ علیه السلام مَا تَقُولُ فِی الْأَطْفَالِ الَّذِینَ مَاتُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ یَبْلُغُوا فَقَالَ سُئِلَ عَنْهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلی الله علیه و آله فَقَالَ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا کَانُوا عَامِلِینَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَیَّ فَقَالَ یَا زُرَارَةُ هَلْ تَدْرِی مَا عَنَی بِذَلِکَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلی الله علیه و آله قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا عَنَی کُفُّوا عَنْهُمْ وَ لَا تَقُولُوا فِیهِمْ شَیْئاً وَ رُدُّوا عِلْمَهُمْ إِلَی اللَّهِ.

Zurara says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): What do you say about children who die before reaching puberty? The Imam said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was asked about them, and he said: Allah knows best what they would have done (had they reached maturity)!

Then the Imam turned to me and said: Do you know what the Prophet meant by this? I said: No! He said: He meant to leave them be, say nothing about them, and refer their matter to Allah!

6 عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ علیه السلام قَالَ: إِنَّمَا یُسْأَلُ فِی قَبْرِهِ مَنْ مَحَضَ الْإِیمَانَ وَ الْکُفْرَ مَحْضاً وَ أَمَّا مَا سِوَی ذَلِکَ فَیُلْهَی عَنْهُ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, only those who have pure faith or disbelief are questioned in their graves, while others (such as children and the incapacitated) are left as they are!

7 عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَر عَنِ الْمُسْتَضْعَفِ فَقَالَ هُوَ الَّذِی لَا یَهْتَدِی حِیلَةً إِلَی الْکُفْرِ فَیَکْفُرَ وَ لَا یَهْتَدِی سَبِیلًا إِلَی الْإِیمَانِ لَا یَسْتَطِیعُ أَنْ یُؤْمِنَ وَ لَا یَسْتَطِیعُ أَنْ یَکْفُرَ فَهُمُ الصِّبْیَانُ وَ مَنْ کَانَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَ النِّسَاءِ عَلَی مِثْلِ عُقُولِ الصِّبْیَانِ مَرْفُوعٌ عَنْهُمُ الْقَلَمُ.

Zurara says: I asked Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) about the incapacitated; he said: Those who have no means to become disbelievers or to find the path to faith cannot become believers nor disbelievers! These are children and men and women whose intellects are like those of children, and the pen (of accountability) is lifted from them!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, a miscarried fetus that is six months or older must be given the ghusl of the deceased, shrouded, and buried in a grave. The prayer for the deceased is only obligatory for a child who has reached six lunar years.

✅ However, since minors are not subject to questioning in the grave and no narration indicates the obligation of talqin for minors during burial, there is no need to recite talqin for them at the time of burial.
