Question 1566: If a man tells his wife he is not pleased with her praying in his house, is the wife's prayer in that house permissible and acceptable?

1 عَنْ عِدَّةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا یَرْفَعُونَهُ إِلَی أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: خَمْسَةٌ لَا یُعْطَوْنَ مِنَ الزَّکَاةِ الْوَلَدُ وَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ وَ الْمَمْلُوکُ لِأَنَّهُ یُجْبَرُ عَلَی النَّفَقَةِ عَلَیْهِمْ.
📚 Ilal al-Shara'i, p. 371, hadith 1
Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'Five people are not given from zakat: a son, parents, a wife, and a slave, because a man is obligated to provide for them!'
2 عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِی خَلَفٍ عَنْ أَبَی الْحَسَنِ مُوسَی في حديث قال...... وَ الْمَرْأَةُ الَّتِی یُطَلِّقُهَا الرَّجُلُ تَطْلِیقَةً ثُمَّ یَدَعُهَا حَتَّی یَخْلُوَ أَجَلُهَا فَهَذِهِ أَیْضاً تَقْعُدُ فِی مَنْزِلِ زَوْجِهَا وَ لَهَا النَّفَقَةُ وَ السُّکْنَی حَتَّی تَنْقَضِیَ عِدَّتُهَا.

Imam Kazim, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said in a hadith: 'A woman whom a man divorces once and then leaves her until her waiting period (iddah) passes, this woman also stays in her husband's house and has the right to maintenance and a place of residence until her waiting period is complete!'
3 عَنِ الْحَلَبِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: قُلْتُ مَنِ الَّذِی أُجْبَرُ عَلَی نَفَقَتِهِ قَالَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَ الْوَلَدُ وَ الزَّوْجَةُ وَ الْوَارِثُ الصَّغِیرُ.

Halabi said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: 'Who is it that I am obligated to provide for?' He said: 'Your father and mother, your children, your wife, and a minor heir!'
4 عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ عَنِ الرِّضَا فِي كِتَابِهِ إِلَى الْمَأْمُونِ قَالَ: وَ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَاجِبٌ وَ إِنْ كَانَا مُشْرِكَيْنِ وَ لَا طَاعَةَ لَهُمَا فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ وَ لَا لِغَيْرِهِمَا فَإِنَّهُ لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ.

Imam Reza, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said in his letter to Ma'mun, may Allah curse him: 'And kindness to parents is obligatory even if they are polytheists, and there is no obedience to them or anyone else in disobedience and sin against the Creator, for indeed, there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator!'

Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said in a hadith: 'Whoever obeys a creature in disobedience to the Creator has surely worshipped that creature!'
5 عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي حَدِيثٍ قَالَ مَنْ أَطَاعَ الْمَخْلُوقَ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ فَقَدْ عَبَدَهُ.

The Commander of the Faithful, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said in a hadith: '...There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator!...'
6 عَنْ سُلَيْمِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ الْهِلَالِيِّ قَالَ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ في حديث... لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ....
✅ According to the above narrations and others, the maintenance and place of residence for a permanent wife are the husband's responsibility, even until the end of the waiting period for a revocable divorce, and a place of residence is one of the wife's rights. On the other hand, it is not permissible to obey the husband in disobeying Allah. Therefore, if a man tells his wife he is not pleased with her praying in his house, neither is his obedience necessary nor does his displeasure invalidate the prayer, and her prayer is valid, and the wife can pray in her husband's house, even if her husband says he is not pleased.
