Question 1507: If, during the washing (Ghusl) of a deceased person, splashes of the water reach the clothes of the washer or another person, does it require purification?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 61
Ibrahim bin Maymun said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person whose clothing comes into contact with a deceased body. The Imam said: If the deceased has been washed, do not wash what touches your clothes. But if the deceased has not yet been washed, wash whatever from the body reaches your clothes—that is, if the body has already become cold!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 161
Halabi said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person whose clothing comes into contact with a deceased body. The Imam said: He should wash whatever has touched his clothes!
📚 Uyun Akhbar al-Ridha, Vol. 2, p. 114
Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) said: The deceased is commanded to be washed because, upon death, impurity, afflictions, and illness prevail over him. Thus, it is preferred that when he is among the pure angels surrounding him, touching him, and accompanying him, he should be clean, pure, and presentable before Allah, the Almighty and Glorious!
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, once the body of the deceased becomes cold after death, impurity prevails over it. If, while still moist, a piece of clothing or an object comes into contact with the deceased’s body or its secretions reach them, it must be washed. However, if the deceased has already been given the ritual washing (Ghusl), washing the affected clothing or object is not required.
✅ The washing of the deceased consists of three ritual washes as prescribed in narrations. Until these three washes are completed, the deceased is not considered fully washed. Therefore, if during these three washes, water splashes from the washing process onto the washer’s clothes or others, the affected clothing must be washed. However, after completing the three ritual washes, if someone’s clothing comes into contact with the deceased’s body secretions, washing is not necessary, as the body has been purified through Ghusl.
✅ The ruling for the washer’s body or others coming into direct contact with the deceased is different, as it necessitates Ghusl Mass al-Mayyit (ritual purification after touching a dead body). You can find relevant narrations in the following link:
