مَا هُوَ حَدُّ الطَّوَافِ وَ هَلْ يَجُوزُ الطَّوَافُ خَلْفَ الْمَقَامِ إِخْتِیَارَاً؟

✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

1 مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ یَحْیَی وَ غَیْرُهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ یَاسِینَ الضَّرِیرِ عَنْ حَرِیزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ حَدِّ الطَّوَافِ بِالْبَیْتِ الَّذِی مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْهُ لَمْ یَکُنْ طَائِفاً بِالْبَیْتِ قَالَ کَانَ النَّاسُ عَلَی عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ یَطُوفُونَ بِالْبَیْتِ وَ الْمَقَامِ وَ أَنْتُمُ الْیَوْمَ تَطُوفُونَ مَا بَیْنَ الْمَقَامِ وَ بَیْنَ الْبَیْتِ فَکَانَ الْحَدُّ مَوْضِعَ الْمَقَامِ الْیَوْمَ فَمَنْ جَازَهُ فَلَیْسَ بِطَائِفٍ وَ الْحَدُّ قَبْلَ الْیَوْمِ وَ الْیَوْمَ وَاحِدٌ قَدْرَ مَا بَیْنَ الْمَقَامِ وَ بَیْنَ الْبَیْتِ مِنْ نَوَاحِی الْبَیْتِ کُلِّهَا فَمَنْ طَافَ فَتَبَاعَدَ مِنْ نَوَاحِیهِ أَبْعَدَ مِنْ مِقْدَارِ ذَلِکَ کَانَ طَائِفاً بِغَیْرِ الْبَیْتِ بِمَنْزِلَةِ مَنْ طَافَ بِالْمَسْجِدِ لِأَنَّهُ طَافَ فِی غَیْرِ حَدٍّ وَ لَا طَوَافَ لَهُ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 413

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked the Imam (Sadiq) (peace be upon him) about the boundary of the 'Tawaf' around the House of Allah, and if someone goes outside of that boundary, is he not considered a person performing Tawaf around the House of Allah?' The Imam said: 'In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), people would perform Tawaf around the House and the Station of Abraham (as the Station of Abraham was attached to the Kaaba at that time), and today you perform Tawaf between the Kaaba and the Station of Abraham, and as a result, its boundary is the current location of the Station of Abraham, and whoever goes beyond it is not considered a person performing Tawaf, and its previous and current boundary is one, which is the area between the Station of Abraham and the Kaaba from all of its sides. So whoever performs Tawaf and goes further away from the Kaaba than this amount, has performed Tawaf around something other than the Kaaba, and is like one who has performed Tawaf around the mosque, because he has performed Tawaf outside of the boundary, and there is no Tawaf for him!'

2 عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْحَلَبِیِّ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الطَّوَافِ خَلْفَ الْمَقَامِ قَالَ مَا أُحِبُّ ذَلِکَ وَ مَا أَرَی بِهِ بَأْساً فَلَا تَفْعَلْهُ إِلَّا أَنْ لَا تَجِدَ مِنْهُ بُدّاً.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 399

Halabi said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about performing Tawaf behind the Station of Abraham.' The Imam said: 'I do not like it and I do not see a problem with it, so do not do it unless you have no other choice!'

✅ Based on narration 1️⃣, the boundary of the 'Tawaf' is between the House and the Station of Abraham, and the person performing Tawaf is obligated to perform his Tawaf within a radius equal to the distance between the House and the Station of Abraham, and if he goes outside of this radius, he is considered as one who has not performed Tawaf around the House and has performed Tawaf around the mosque, and there is no Tawaf for him.

✅ In narration 2️⃣, although there is a mention of permission to perform Tawaf outside of the boundary between the House and the Station of Abraham, at the end of the hadith it is explicitly stated that this permission is only for a state of necessity and compulsion, and this permission is only to be used in a state of necessity such as an impenetrable or unbearable crowd and the like.

✅ The use of the permission to perform Tawaf outside the Station of Abraham when it is not a necessity, from hadith 2️⃣, is a clear contradiction of hadith 1️⃣ and is against precaution and in agreement with the fatwa of Shafi'i from the 'Umariyyah' (Sunnis), who, based on what Shaykh Tusi has narrated in the book 'Al-Khilaf,' even considers Tawaf around Zamzam to be permissible. Therefore, when it is not a necessity, the Tawaf must be performed within the radius between the House of Allah and the Station of Abraham.
