Question 1457: Is zakat applicable to gold coins (e.g., Bahar Azadi coins)?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 7
Imam Sadiq and Imam Kazim, peace be upon them, said: There is no zakat on unrefined gold or uncoined gold (or gold that is still in its ore), indeed zakat is only on gold coins and silver coins!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 518
Ali ibn Yaqtin says: I asked Imam Kazim, peace be upon him, about wealth that is not used or circulated; the Imam said: Zakat is due on it every year unless it is turned into ingots!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 518
Ali ibn Yaqtin says: I said to Imam Kazim, peace be upon him: Indeed, some wealth accumulates with me and remains for about a year, should we pay its zakat? The Imam said: No! Whatever has not been with you for a full year has no zakat due on it, and whatever is not rikaz has nothing due on it! I said: What is rikaz? He said: Coined and minted gold and silver!
Then he said: If you wish (to avoid zakat), turn it into ingots, for there is no zakat on gold ingots or refined silver!
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 16
Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: There is no zakat on silver ingots!
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, one of the conditions for zakat to become obligatory on gold and silver is that it must be in the form of minted coins, and zakat does not apply to gold and silver ingots.
✅ The gold coins available today are not considered ingots, and their status as coined currency is established, even though, for incidental and unrelated reasons, they are only used in a few transactions such as dowries and the like.
Therefore, if the other conditions for zakat obligation are met, such as the passage of a year, reaching the minimum threshold (nisab), etc., it is necessary to pay their zakat.
✅ In the narrations, the widespread use of gold coins in transactions has not been stipulated as a condition for the obligation of zakat on gold coins. Moreover, transactions with gold coins are not entirely nonexistent and are used in a few instances. Applying the recommended principle of caution, combined with the above narrations and others, clarifies our duty to pay zakat on gold coins that meet the conditions.

The Imam said: The narrator of our hadith, who strengthens the hearts of our Shia through it, is better and more virtuous than a thousand worshipers!
