Answer

✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 545

Sama'ah said: I asked Abul-Hasan (peace be upon him) about khums. The Imam said: It applies to everything people earn and acquire, whether little or much!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 141

Ali ibn Mahziyar said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) wrote a letter to me, which I read on the way to Mecca. In it, he said: May Allah have mercy on you! The spoils and benefits (that khums applies to) are the income and earnings that a person acquires, the gains he attains, and valuable gifts and donations that someone gives to a person....

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 545

Ahmad said: I wrote to the Imam (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom! Teach me what a 'benefit' (fa’ida) is and its definition. May Allah preserve you! I wish to know your view so that I do not remain negligent of the unlawful, lest neither my prayer nor my fasting be accepted! The Imam replied: A benefit is what reaches you from trade profits, farming after paying wages, or gifts and donations!

📚 Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 122

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whoever acquires or earns something, it is obligatory upon him to pay khums of what he has gained for Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) and those of her descendants who, after her, are entrusted with her affairs and are Allah’s proof upon the people. It is exclusively for them, and they may spend it wherever they wish!

📚 Mustatrafat al-Sara’ir, p. 100

Abu Basir said: I wrote to Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): A man’s friend, with whom he chooses to keep company, gives him a gift that reaches two thousand dirhams, or less, or more. Is paying khums on it obligatory for him? The Imam wrote back: Yes, khums applies to it!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 123

One of the companions wrote to Imam al-Jawad (peace be upon him): Tell me about khums. Does it apply to everything a person gains or earns, in small or large amounts, and also to craftsmen? How is it? The Imam, in his own handwriting, replied: Khums is due after deducting annual expenses!

✅ According to the above narrations and others, khums applies to all types of spoils and benefits that a person earns or acquires, after deducting annual living expenses. A valuable gift is one of those cases, which is specifically mentioned in the narrations as a 'gift' (hadiyya) or 'prize' (ja’iza). Therefore, if someone receives a gift and it is not consumed in their annual expenses, it becomes subject to khums, and they must pay it—unless it is spent during the year on their living expenses.
