الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
Translation:
Woe to those who give short measure!
Who, when they take a measure from people, they take it in full;
But when they measure or weigh for others, they give less!
📖 Surah Al-Mutaffifin
1 عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ الْجَمَّالِ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ فِیکُمْ خَصْلَتَیْنِ هَلَکَ بِهِمَا مَنْ قَبْلَکُمْ مِنَ الْأُمَمِ قَالُوا وَ مَا هُمَا یَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ الْمِکْیَالُ وَ الْمِیزَانُ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'There are two traits in you with which the nations before you were destroyed: the measure and the scale!'
2 عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: مَرَّ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِین عَلَی جَارِیَةٍ قَدِ اشْتَرَتْ لَحْماً مِنْ قَصَّابٍ وَ هِیَ تَقُولُ زِدْنِی فَقَالَ لَهُ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ زِدْهَا فَإِنَّهُ أَعْظَمُ لِلْبَرَکَةِ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) passed by a maidservant who was buying meat from a butcher and she was saying: 'Give me more!' Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said to that butcher: 'Give her more! For this causes more blessings!'
3 عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِی عُمَیْرٍ عَنْ غَیْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: لَا یَکُونُ الْوَفَاءُ حَتَّی یَرْجَحَ.

4 عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ بَشِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: لَا یَکُونُ الْوَفَاءُ حَتَّی یَمِیلَ الْمِیزَانُ.

5 عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ: قَالَ: مَنْ أَخَذَ الْمِیزَانَ بِیَدِهِ فَنَوَی أَنْ یَأْخُذَ لِنَفْسِهِ وَافِیاً لَمْ یَأْخُذْ إِلَّا رَاجِحاً وَ مَنْ أَعْطَی فَنَوَی أَنْ یُعْطِیَ سَوَاءً لَمْ یُعْطِ إِلَّا نَاقِصاً.

The Imam (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever holds the scale with his own hand to take in full for himself, he does not take but heavier. And whoever gives and intends to give exactly equal, he does not give but deficient!'
6 عَنْ عُبَیْدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّه إِنِّی صَاحِبُ نَخْلٍ فَخَبِّرْنِی بِحَدٍّ أَنْتَهِی إِلَیْهِ فِیهِ مِنَ الْوَفَاءِ فَقَالَ أبو عبداللّه انْوِ الْوَفَاءَ فَإِنْ أَتَی عَلَی یَدِکَ وَ قَدْ نَوَیْتَ الْوَفَاءَ نُقْصَانٌ کُنْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْوَفَاءِ وَ إِنْ نَوَیْتَ النُّقْصَانَ ثُمَّ أَوْفَیْتَ کُنْتَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النُّقْصَانِ.

Ubayd said: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'I am a date palm owner. So, inform me of a limit for giving in full so that I can act upon it.' So Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Intend to give in full, so if a deficiency occurs in your hand (unintentionally and by mistake) while you intend to give in full, you are counted among the people of giving in full. And if you intend to give short measure and you give in full, you are counted among the people of giving short measure!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, giving short measure in the measure and scale is one of the causes of destruction, and we are obligated to give in full in the measure and scale, and giving in full is that, first, we intend to give in full and our intention is not to give exactly equal and precise, and second, we make the load slightly heavier than the intended weight so that it outweighs the weight and the tongue of the scale tips to that side.
For example, if we intend to sell one kilogram of chickpeas, we should start weighing with the intention of giving in full and not intend to give exactly 1000 grams, and we should weigh a few grams more and give it to the customer.
Therefore, if the load is weighed exactly to the intended weight, it is not considered fulfillment and giving in full, and it is necessary to add a little so that it becomes heavier than the intended weight and the tongue of the scale tips to the other side.
✅ Today, those who deliver exactly 1000 grams of goods to the customer with these digital scales are not considered among the people of fulfillment and giving in full, and it is appropriate that they pay special attention to this matter.
✅ Based on narration 5, a person who wants to weigh another person's goods for his own purchase should not intend to weigh in full so that he does not weigh more.
