Question 1401: What is a person's duty if they are in the middle of prayer and their father or mother calls out to them?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
1 عَنْ أَبِی جَرِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ مُوسَی قال: قال: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا کَانَ فِی الصَّلَاةِ فَدَعَاهُ الْوَالِدُ فَلْیُسَبِّحْ فَإِذَا دَعَتْهُ الْوَالِدَةُ فَلْیَقُلْ لَبَّیْکِ
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 350
Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him) said: 'When a person is in the middle of prayer, and his father calls out to him, he should say 'Subhanallah,' and if his mother calls out to him, he should say 'Labbayk' (answer her - say: 'I am at your command')!'
2 From Abu Jamila, from Abu Ja'far, who said: 'There was a worshiper among the Children of Israel named Jurayh, and he used to worship in his hermitage. His mother came to him while he was praying and called him, but he did not answer her. She went back, then came to him again and called him, but he did not pay attention to her. She went back, then came to him again and called him, but he did not answer her or speak to her! She went back, saying: 'I ask the God of the Children of Israel to forsake you!' The next day, a harlot came and sat by his hermitage, in labor, and claimed that the child was from Jurayh. It spread among the Children of Israel that the one who used to blame people for fornication had himself fornicated, and the king ordered him to be crucified. His mother came to him, slapping her face, and he said to her: 'Be silent, this is because of your curse!' When the people heard this from Jurayh, they said: 'How can we know that this is true?' He said: 'Bring the baby!' They brought him, and he took him and said: 'Who is your father?' The child said: 'Such and such a shepherd from such and such a tribe!' And thus, Allah falsified what they had said about Jurayh, and Jurayh swore that he would not leave his mother and would always serve her.'
📚 Qisas al-Anbiya, Rawandi, p. 176
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'There was a worshiper among the Children of Israel named Jurayh, and he used to worship in his hermitage. His mother came to him while he was praying and called him, but he did not answer her. She went back, then came to him again and called him, but he did not pay attention to her! She went back, then came to him again and called him, but he did not answer her or speak to her! His mother went back, saying: 'I ask the Lord of the Children of Israel to remove His help from you!'
'The next day, a harlot came and sat by his hermitage while she was in labor and claimed that the child was from Jurayh! It spread among the Children of Israel that this person who used to blame people for fornication had himself fornicated, and the king ordered his execution! So his mother came, slapping her face, and her son said to her: 'Be silent, for this is because of your curse!' When the people heard this from Jurayh, they said: 'How can we know the truth of this?' He said: 'Bring the newborn child!' They brought the child, and he took him and said: 'Who is your father?' The child said: 'Such and such a shepherd from such and such a tribe!' And in this way, Allah falsified what they had said about Jurayh, and Jurayh swore that he would not leave his mother and would always serve her!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 69
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'The start of prayer is wudu, its sanctification is the takbir, and its de-sanctification is the salutation!'
5 عن أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قال: إِنْ تَکَلَّمْتَ أَوْ صَرَفْتَ وَجْهَکَ عَنِ الْقِبْلَةِ فَأَعِدِ الصَّلَاة
📚 Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 366
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'If you spoke or turned your face away from the qiblah, then repeat your prayer!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, by saying the takbirat al-ihram and entering the prayer, speaking and talking with created beings and some other actions are forbidden, and these prohibitions are lifted with the salutation of the prayer.
However, among the forbidden matters, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have given permission to break the prayer before its completion in some circumstances and for some matters, each of which has its own specific place and rulings.
But regarding when a father or mother calls their child who is in the middle of prayer, in narration 1, it is observed that for a father, there is no permission to break the prayer, and the person is obligated to say 'Subhanallah' in response to the father, which does not cause the prayer to be broken, and he continues his prayer.
However, in the case of a mother, it is commanded to say 'Labbayk' and to answer her, which, because it is a statement and speech with created beings, causes the prayer to be broken, and consequently, the necessity of repeating the prayer is also proven. Therefore, breaking the prayer for the sake of answering the mother has a dispensation and is outside of the general prohibitions mentioned in the narrations.
✅ In this matter, only narrations 1 and 2 have been mentioned in Shia narrations, and the general (Sunni) narrations that are found in some books and only indicate answering the mother in a supererogatory prayer, due to their generality and other reasons, do not have authenticity or even explicitness to specify narration 1 to a supererogatory prayer. Therefore, narration 1 includes all prayers.
