✅ Answer: The following narration gives permission to recite only Surah Al-Hamd in the supererogatory prayer:

عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ یَجُوزُ لِلْمَرِیضِ أَنْ یَقْرَأَ فِی الْفَرِیضَةِ فَاتِحَةَ الْکِتَابِ وَحْدَهَا وَ یَجُوزُ لِلصَّحِیحِ فِی قَضَاءِ صَلَاةِ التَّطَوُّعِ بِاللَّیْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: It is permissible for a sick person to recite only Surah Al-Hamd in the obligatory prayer, and it is permissible for a healthy person to recite only Surah Al-Hamd in the performance of the supererogatory prayer at night and during the day.

عَنِ الشَّيْخِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ فِيمَا رَوَاهُ فِي كِتَابِهِ كِتَابِ ثَوَابِ الْأَعْمَالِ عَنِ الصَّادِقِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: تَنَفَّلُوا وَ لَوْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُمَا يُورِدَانِ دَارَ الْكَرَامَةِ قِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ مَا مَعْنَى خَفِيفَتَيْنِ قَالَ تَقْرَأُ فِيهِمَا الْحَمْدَ وَحْدَهَا قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَمَتَى أُصَلِّيهِمَا قَالَ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَ الْعِشَاءِ

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) that he said: Perform a supererogatory prayer, even if it is two light rak'ahs, for it leads to the House of Generosity; it was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of 'two light rak'ahs'? He said: It means that you recite only Al-Hamd in these two rak'ahs; it was said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), when should we perform those two rak'ahs? He said: Between the Maghrib and 'Isha' prayers.

✅ In the hadith 📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih Vol. 1, p. 565, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) named this time 'the hour of heedlessness,' and the permission to perform this supererogatory prayer with only Al-Hamd is clear in the above hadith.

✅ According to the narrations, in the supererogatory prayer, after Al-Hamd, one can recite only a part of a Surah, including:

Translation: Ali ibn Yaqtin said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about reciting a part of a Surah (in the obligatory prayer), the Imam said: I dislike this, but in the supererogatory prayer, there is no problem.

✅ This means that in the supererogatory prayer, one can recite a part of a Surah after Surah Al-Hamd.

✅ Also, according to the narrations, in the supererogatory prayer, after Al-Hamd, one can recite several Surahs together, including:

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِی یَعْفُورٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ أَنْ تَجْمَعَ فِی النَّافِلَةِ مِنَ السُّوَرِ مَا شِئْتَ

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: There is no problem in combining whatever Surahs you wish in the supererogatory prayer.

✅ This means that in the supererogatory prayer, after Al-Hamd, you can recite any number of Surahs you wish.

عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَا تَقْرَأْ فِی الْمَکْتُوبَةِ بِأَقَلَّ مِنْ سُورَةٍ وَ لَا بِأَکْثَرَ

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: In the obligatory prayer (after Surah Al-Hamd), do not recite less than one Surah nor more than one Surah.

عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَنْ یَقْرَأَ الرَّجُلُ فِی الْفَرِیضَةِ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْکِتَابِ فِی الرَّکْعَتَیْنِ الْأَوَّلَتَیْنِ إِذَا مَا أَعْجَلَتْ بِهِ حَاجَةٌ أَوْ تَخَوَّفَ شَیْئاً

Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: There is no problem for a person, when a matter has urged him to hurry or he has fear of something, to recite (only) Surah Al-Hamd in the first two rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer.
