✅Answer: After hundreds of years in Islam where all graves were single-level, in recent years two-level and multi-level graves have appeared. Regarding this newly introduced matter and things like it, pay attention to the following narration:

عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ أَبِی یَحْیَی قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ یَقُولُ صَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْمِنْبَرَ فَتَغَیَّرَتْ وَجْنَتَاهُ وَ الْتُمِعَ لَوْنُهُ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ یَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِینَ إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ أَنَا وَ السَّاعَةُ کَهَاتَیْنِ قَالَ ثُمَّ ضَمَّ السَّبَّاحَتَیْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ یَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِینَ إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْهَدْیِ هَدْیُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ خَیْرَ الْحَدِیثِ کِتَابُ اللَّهِ وَ شَرَّ الْأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا أَلَا وَ کُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ أَلَا وَ کُلُّ ضَلَالَةٍ فَفِی النَّارِ

Translation: Mansur said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) ascended the pulpit, his cheeks changed, his color turned pale and altered, then he faced the people and said: O group of Muslims! Indeed, I and the Hour (Resurrection) have been sent like these two, and he placed his two index fingers together (meaning my mission is directly connected and close to the Resurrection). Then he said: Truly, the best way, method, and tradition is the way and tradition of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and the best word is the Book of Allah (the Qur’an), and the worst of matters are the newly introduced ones and innovations. Be aware that every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.

عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَیْسٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ علیه السلام، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ یَقُولُ «إِنَّ اللّه َ تَبَارَکَ وَتَعَالی لَمْ یَدَعْ شَیْئاً تَحْتَاجُ إِلَیْهِ الاْءُمَّةُ إِلاَّ أَنْزَلَهُ فِی کِتَابِهِ، وَبَیَّنَهُ لِرَسُولِهِ صلی الله علیه و آله، وَجَعَلَ لِکُلِّ شَیْءٍ حَدّاً وَجَعَلَ عَلَیْهِ دَلِیلاً یَدُلُّ عَلَیْهِ، وَجَعَلَ عَلی مَنْ تَعَدّی ذلِکَ الْحَدَّ حَدّاً

📚 Al-Kafi, vol.1, p.59

Translation: Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has not left anything that the community needs without revealing it in His Book, explaining it to His Messenger, setting a limit for it, appointing a guide to direct toward it, and setting a limit for whoever transgresses it.

✅Now that it is clear Allah the Exalted has set a limit for everything, and for one who transgresses it He has set a specific limit, let us pay attention to some of the divine limits regarding graves:

عَنِ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ النَّبِیَّ نَهَی أَنْ یُعَمَّقَ الْقَبْرُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَذْرُعٍ

📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.166

Translation: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) forbade that a grave be dug deeper than three cubits (about one and a half meters).

عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَدُّ الْقَبْرِ إِلَی التَّرْقُوَةِ

📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, vol.1, p.171

Translation: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The limit of a grave is up to the collarbone.

✅The collarbone is the bone at the top of the chest located between the hollow of the throat and the shoulder.

📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, vol.1, p.189

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ قَالَ قَالَ الصَّادِقُ کُلُّ مَا جُعِلَ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ مِنْ غَیْرِ تُرَابِ الْقَبْرِ فَهُوَ ثِقْلٌ عَلَی الْمَیِّتِ

Translation: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Anything placed on a grave other than the soil of the grave itself is a burden and heaviness upon the deceased.

📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.202

عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ النَّبِیَّ نَهَی أَنْ یُزَادَ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ تُرَابٌ لَمْ یُخْرَجْ مِنْهُ

Translation: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) forbade placing soil on a grave that was not taken from it.

✅Also, Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not plaster the grave with clay other than its own soil.

✅It is observed that in multi-level graves, in addition to being a newly introduced matter and an innovation, several divine limits are violated. Among them: the lower graves are dug deeper than the allowed limit; concrete is used to separate one grave from another, which is both a burden on the deceased and plastering with material other than its soil; and soil from outside the grave is placed into the grave, and so on...

✅Since nowadays most cemeteries are multi-level and we are not given permission to bury the deceased in a place of our own choosing, it is necessary for believers to make arrangements for this matter before death so no problem arises. Also, every effort should be made to ensure that believers who pass away are buried in suitable places and in accordance with divine limits.
