Question 1313: If someone has several missed prayers to make up, is it sufficient to say the adhan and iqamah only for the first prayer and perform the rest without adhan and iqamah?
Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 291
Imam Baqir, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'When you forget a prayer or perform it without wudu, and you have some prayers to make up, then begin with the first one, say the adhan and iqamah for it and perform it, and then perform the subsequent prayers with one iqamah for each...'
📚 Al-Tahdheeb, vol. 3, p. 159
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about a person who performed prayers for one, two, or three days while in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity) and then realized it.' The Imam said: 'He should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and say the adhan and iqamah for the first prayer and perform it, and after that, for each prayer, he should only say the iqamah and perform it without adhan until he has made up all his prayers!'
📚 Al-Tahdheeb, vol. 2, p. 352
Jamil said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: 'A person misses the Dhuhr, Asr, and Maghrib prayers, and remembers them during the time for the Isha prayer (i.e., during the exclusive time for Isha).' The Imam said: 'He should first begin with the prayer whose time has come, because he is not safe from death, and consequently, he would have abandoned the obligatory prayer whose time has begun. And then he should make up the missed prayers in their correct order!'
✅ Based on the above narrations, if someone has several missed prayers to make up for any reason and wants to start making them up, for the first prayer he wants to perform, he should say both the adhan and the iqamah. For the subsequent prayers, he should not say the adhan and should only say one iqamah for each and perform them until they are all done.
The above duty is stated in a general way and does not distinguish between performing all the missed prayers in one session or in multiple sessions. Therefore, when he says both the adhan and the iqamah for the first prayer and performs it, he should perform the subsequent missed prayers with only one iqamah, even if he performs some of them on later days due to their large number. And on the following days when he wants to continue making up his missed prayers, he should only say one iqamah for each prayer and perform them.
Based on narration 3️⃣ and others, one is obligated to make up the prayers in their correct order.
✅ Imam Sadiq, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said in a hadith in Bihar, vol. 52, p. 133:
Meaning: 'If you wake up one day and it gets to night, but you have not seen an Imam from the family of Muhammad, peace be upon them, then love those whom you used to love and be an enemy to those whom you used to be an enemy to, and consider those whom you had designated as your Wali (guardian) and Imam to be your Wali and Imam, and morning and evening, be in anticipation of the Relief!'
Indeed! We are obligated to be in anticipation of the Relief day and night, and the constant repetition of the following prayer can be a sign of our anticipation:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We extend our condolences on the martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him)...
Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 75
Imam Hasan al-Askari, peace be upon him, said:
There are two qualities above which there is nothing: Faith in Allah and providing benefit to one's brothers.
