Question1245: Are the Qunuts of the Prayer of Signs (Salat al-Ayat) recommended, and is it permissible to perform only one Qunut in it?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.3, p.155
Imam al-Baqir or Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them, said in a narration: The prayer of the eclipse of the sun and moon, and trembling and earthquakes, is ten rak‘ahs with four prostrations... until he said: And the Qunut in it is in the second rak‘ah before bowing, after finishing the recitation. Then in the fourth rak‘ah you perform Qunut likewise, then in the sixth rak‘ah, then in the eighth, and then in the tenth....
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.463
In a narration, Zurara and Muhammad ibn Muslim said: We asked Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, about the prayer of eclipse — how many rak‘ahs is it and how should we perform it? He said: It is ten rak‘ahs with four prostrations. You begin the prayer with one Takbir... until he said: And at the head of every two rak‘ahs, before bowing, you perform Qunut, and you lengthen the Qunut!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol.1, p.549
Umar ibn Udhaynah narrated that indeed the Qunut in the second rak‘ah (of Salat al-Ayat) is before bowing, and then in the fourth rak‘ah, and the sixth rak‘ah, and the eighth rak‘ah, and the tenth rak‘ah!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol.1, p.549
Shaykh al-Saduq, after narration 3 , said: And if one performs Qunut only before the fifth bowing and before the tenth bowing, it is permissible because of the existence of a report and narration for it!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol.1, p.316
Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Qunut exists in every two rak‘ahs of both supererogatory and obligatory prayers!
📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.339
Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever abandons Qunut out of disinterest, his prayer is not accepted!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.2, p.315
Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: If a person forgets the Qunut in any of the prayers until he bows, his prayer is valid and nothing is upon him, but he must not deliberately abandon it!
📚 Al-Hidayah of al-Saduq, p.29
Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever deliberately abandons Qunut, his prayer is not accepted!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol.1, p.316
Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Qunut is in all prayers!
✅ It is observed that in the narrations regarding the manner of Salat al-Ayat, five Qunuts are prescribed, to be performed before the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth bowings. No concession has been reported for deliberately abandoning them. Also, some general narrations on Qunut indicate its presence in all prayers and that there is no allowance for deliberate abandonment. Therefore, as a binding Sunnah, the five Qunuts of Salat al-Ayat must be performed in their designated places, and there is no concession for deliberately omitting them — except that Shaykh al-Saduq, without mentioning a narration, claimed that there is a report permitting sufficing with two Qunuts in Salat al-Ayat, before the fifth and before the tenth bowings.
✅ No narration has been reported indicating that Qunut in Salat al-Ayat is merely recommended or that performing only one Qunut in Salat al-Ayat is permissible.
