Question 1131: What is the ruling on a halal animal that has not been slaughtered facing the qibla?
Answer
✅Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 229
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Baqir (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about slaughtering. The Imam said: 'Face your slaughtered animal towards the qibla!'
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 233
Imam Sadiq (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about a slaughtered animal that was not slaughtered facing the qibla. The Imam said: 'If he did not do it intentionally (i.e., with knowledge, will, intention, and deliberation), there is no problem!'
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 233
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Baqir (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about a person who slaughters an animal and is ignorant and unaware of facing it towards the qibla. The Imam said: 'Eat from it!'
I said: 'Indeed, he did not face it towards the qibla (intentionally)!' He said: 'Do not eat from it, and do not eat from a slaughtered animal over which the name of Allah has not been mentioned!'
And he said: 'When you want to slaughter, face your slaughtered animal towards the qibla!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, a person who wants to slaughter an animal must face it towards the qibla. If he intentionally does not face it towards the qibla, that slaughtered animal is not edible, unless this act was not done with intent and deliberation, i.e., it was done out of ignorance of this duty, or by mistake, or by forgetting. In such a case, there is no problem with consuming that slaughtered animal.
So, if the person who slaughtered was ignorant that he should face the slaughtered animal towards the qibla, or if he made a mistake in the direction of the qibla, or if he forgot to face it towards the qibla at the time of slaughtering, there is no problem with eating his slaughtered animal because committing an act out of ignorance, making a mistake, or forgetting is considered unintentional. However, a slaughtered animal that was intentionally not slaughtered facing the qibla is not edible.
