1 عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ كَانَ فِي وَصِيَّةِ النَّبِيِّ لِعَلِيٍّ أَنْ قَالَ: يَا عَلِيُّ أُوصِيكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ بِخِصَالٍ فَاحْفَظْهَا عَنِّي ثُمَّ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنْهُ وَ عَدَّ جُمْلَةً مِنَ الْخِصَالِ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ وَ عَلَيْكَ بِالسِّوَاكِ عِنْدَ كُلِّ وُضُوءٍ.

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 8, page 79

Muawiyah ibn Ammar said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: In the testament of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), he said: O Ali! I recommend to you a few traits for yourself, so preserve them from me! Then he said: O Allah! Help him! Until he said: Be sure to use the miswak with every ablution!

2 عَنِ الْمُعَلَّى بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ السِّوَاكِ بَعْدَ الْوُضُوءِ فَقَالَ الِاسْتِيَاكُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ قُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ نَسِيَ حَتَّى يَتَوَضَّأَ قَالَ يَسْتَاكُ ثُمَّ يَتَمَضْمَضُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ.

Mualla said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about brushing one's teeth after ablution; he said: Brushing is before performing ablution!

I said: Tell me what to do if one forgets to brush until they have performed ablution?! He said: (After ablution) he brushes and then rinses his mouth three times!

3 عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: مَنِ اسْتَاكَ فَلْيَتَمَضْمَضْ.

📚 Al-Mahasin, page 563

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who brushes must rinse their mouth (swirl water in the mouth and spit it out)!

4 عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: رَكْعَتَانِ بِالسِّوَاكِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ رَكْعَةً بِغَيْرِ سِوَاكٍ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Two cycles of prayer with a miswak are better than seventy cycles without a miswak!

5 عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ الرَّجُلُ وَ سَوَّكَ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى وَضَعَ الْمَلَكُ فَاهُ عَلَى فِيهِ فَلَمْ يَلْفِظْ شَيْئاً إِلَّا الْتَقَمَهُ.

The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: When a person performs ablution and brushes his teeth, and then stands for prayer, an angel places its mouth on his mouth, so he says nothing except that the angel swallows it!

6 عَنِ الْحَلَبِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّه کَانَ إِذَا صَلَّی الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ أَمَرَ بِوَضُوئِهِ وَ سِوَاکِهِ یُوضَعُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ مُخَمَّراً فَیَرْقُدُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ یَقُومُ فَیَسْتَاکُ وَ یَتَوَضَّأُ وَ یُصَلِّی أَرْبَعَ رَکَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ یَرْقُدُ ثُمَّ یَقُومُ فَیَسْتَاکُ وَ یَتَوَضَّأُ وَ یُصَلِّی أَرْبَعَ رَکَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ یَرْقُدُ حَتَّی إِذَا کَانَ فِی وَجْهِ الصُّبْحِ قَامَ فَأَوْتَرَ ثُمَّ صَلَّی الرَّکْعَتَیْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَقَدْ کانَ لَکُمْ فِی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ...

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, page 445

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) would pray the Isha prayer, he would command that his water for ablution and his miswak be placed covered by his head. Then he would sleep for as long as Allah willed, and then he would rise, brush his teeth, perform ablution, and pray four cycles. Then he would sleep again, and then he would rise, brush his teeth, and pray another four cycles. Then he would sleep, and when it was morning, he would rise and perform the Witr prayer, and then perform the two cycles of the morning prayer!

Then the Imam said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is an excellent example for you!

✅ It is clear from the above and other narrations that brushing one's teeth for ablution is before performing ablution, but if someone forgets to brush before ablution, they should brush and rinse their mouth afterward.
