Question 1023: How is Tayammum (dry ablution) performed?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Surah Al-Ma'idah, Ayah 6
And if you are ill, on a journey, or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself, or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it...

Zurarah narrated: I asked Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, about Tayammum. So the Imam placed both his hands on the ground, then lifted them and shook them. After that, he wiped his forehead, and both hands, once over the forehead and once over the backs of the hands.

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: One day, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family, asked Ammar about his journey. Ammar replied, 'I became Junub (ritually impure), so I rolled in the dirt.' The Prophet, peace be upon him, jokingly said, 'Even a donkey does the same! Why didn't you do this?' Then the Prophet placed both his hands on the ground, lifted them, and wiped once on his forehead and both palms.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, Page 109
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Allah has made the earth a means of purification, just as He has made water a means of purification!
✅ Based on the above and other narrations, someone who is obligated to perform Tayammum and intends to do so goes to something suitable for Tayammum:
1. Strikes both hands together on the surface suitable for Tayammum.
2. Shakes the hands together to let dust fall off them.
3. With both hands, wipes over the entire forehead and both hands or, according to some narrations, over the forehead and both sides of the forehead down to the eyebrows.
4. The left palm is wiped over the back of the right hand from the wrist to the fingertips, and then the right palm is wiped over the back of the left hand from the wrist to the fingertips.
✅ In some narrations, both hands are struck on the ground once for the face and once for the hands. Due to the contradiction with most traditions, the mention of striking hands on the ground twice has not been included, and emphasis has been placed on the narrations indicating striking hands on the ground once.
✅ What needs to be wiped is the 'palms,' as stated in the narration. Although in narration 6⃣, it is mentioned that the Imam did not wipe a part from the forearm, indicating that wiping the forearm is not necessary, in narration 5⃣, the Imam wiped slightly above the wrists to ensure the entire palm is wiped. For this reason, this action is mentioned to ensure the completeness of wiping the entire palm.
✅ A narration with a different approach to wiping the hands from the forearm to the fingertips and wiping the entire face is considered an isolated narration and contradicts the Tayammum mentioned in the Qur'an, making it impractical.
✅ In the narrations by commentators, the range of wiping the face includes 'forehead,' 'forehead and both sides' or 'forehead and both sides down to the eyebrows.' In Hadith 3⃣, the final range is defined as under the eyebrows. Therefore, wiping the forehead and both sides, starting from the hairline to below the eyebrows, fulfills the requirements of all authentic and corroborated narrations and aligns with the Qur'anic verse.
✅ Regarding placing the hands on the earth or the item used for Tayammum, both the terms 'ضَرب' (Zarb - striking) and 'وَضع' (Wad') are mentioned in authentic narrations. While both are valid, the term 'Zarb' is more well-known, and acting upon it includes acting upon the narrations using 'Wad'.
✅ According to well-known narrations like Hadith 4⃣, the general rule and method of Tayammum are the same for substituting Wudu, Janabah, and the purification from menstruation.
✅ The ruling and general method of Tayammum, in addition to Surah Al-Ma'idah, Ayah 6, are also mentioned in Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 43.
