Question 1021: What is the duty of a woman who sees blood during pregnancy?

Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 97
Sulayman ibn Khalid said: I said to Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him): 'May I be sacrificed for you! A pregnant woman sometimes menstruates!' He said: 'Yes! And its explanation is that the baby's food in the mother's womb is blood, and sometimes the blood increases and is more than (the baby's needs), so if the blood is in excess for the baby, it expels it. So, when she expels it, prayer becomes forbidden for her!'
✅ According to the above narration and others, it is possible for pregnancy and menstruation to occur at the same time, meaning a woman can menstruate while being pregnant.
✅ A pregnant woman seeing blood has different types and situations that need to be distinguished to determine the duty for each of them.
1 The first case is when there is only one or two discharges and it is not continuous, which is explained in the following narration:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 387
Humayd ibn Muthanna said: I asked Imam Kazim (prayers of God be upon him) about a pregnant woman who sees one or two discharges of blood during the days of one or two months. The Imam said: 'This is a discharge, and such a person does not refrain from prayer!'
2 The second case is a woman who had a specific and defined time for her menstruation, and she sees blood at the same time she used to menstruate before pregnancy. Her ruling is determined in the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 97
Abd al-Rahman ibn Hajjaj said: I asked Imam Kazim (prayers of God be upon him) about a pregnant woman who sees blood every month during her pregnancy, just as she used to see blood before pregnancy. Should she stop praying? He said: 'If the blood continues and is continuous (and is not just one or two discharges like in hadith 2 ), she stops praying!'
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 95
Husayn ibn Nu'aym al-Sahhaf said: 'My umm walad (a slave woman who bore her master a child) is pregnant and sees blood, what should she do about prayer?' He said: The Imam said to me: 'If the pregnant woman sees blood after 20 days have passed from the day of the month she used to stop (from prayer before pregnancy), this is not from the womb or from menstruation, so she should perform Wudu, insert a cotton pad, and pray.'
And if the pregnant woman sees blood a little before the time she used to see blood, or at the same time of the month she used to see blood (before pregnancy), this is from menstruation. So, she should stop praying for the number of days she used to menstruate, and if her bleeding stops before that, she should perform ghusl and pray...
Ruling on menstruation during pregnancy

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked one of the two Imams, Baqir or Sadiq (prayers of God be upon them both), about a pregnant woman who sees blood just as she used to see the days of her menstruation directly (with a specific time). He said: 'She should refrain from prayer just as she used to do during her menstruation, and when she becomes pure, she should pray!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 386
Sama'ah said: I asked the Imam (Sadiq) (prayers of God be upon him) about a woman who sees blood during pregnancy. He said: 'She should stop (from prayer) for the number of days she used to menstruate. Then, if the blood is more than the number of days she used to menstruate, she should observe precaution for three days and then she is in a state of 'istihada' (she should act according to the rulings of 'istihada')!'
✅ According to the above narrations, a woman who had a specific time for her menstruation, if she sees blood during pregnancy a little before her time or at her time, has the ruling of a menstruating woman. And if the blood is more than the number of days she had, she observes precaution for three days, and after that, she has the ruling of 'istihada.'
However, if her bleeding during pregnancy is 20 days after the time of the month she used to menstruate, this blood is not from menstruation or the womb, and she should insert a cotton pad and pray. It is clear that these narrations are for a woman who had a specific time and now determines her duty based on it.
3 In the third case, if the woman did not have a specific time and she sees blood or yellowness during pregnancy, she should act according to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 96
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked one of the two Imams, Baqir or Sadiq (prayers of God be upon them both), about a pregnant woman whose pregnancy has become apparent and she sees what a menstruating woman sees of blood. He said: 'This is a blood discharge. If the blood is a lot and red, she should not pray. And if it is a little and yellow, nothing is upon her except Wudu!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 387
Ishaq ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him) about a pregnant woman who sees blood for one or two days. He said: 'If the blood is fresh, she should not pray for those two days, and if the blood is yellow, she should perform ghusl for every two prayers!'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 387
Abi al-Mughra said: I asked Imam Sadiq (prayers of God be upon him) about a pregnant woman whose pregnancy has become apparent and she sees what a menstruating woman sees of blood. He said: 'It is a blood discharge. If the blood is a lot, she should not pray, and if it is a little, she should perform ghusl for every two prayers!'
✅ According to the above narrations, a pregnant woman who did not have a specific time, if she sees a lot of fresh red blood during pregnancy, which is one of the signs of menstrual blood, she should stop praying. If the blood is a little (i.e., not fresh and has the characteristics of 'istihada' blood), according to narration 9 , she should perform one ghusl for the night and morning prayers, one ghusl for the noon and afternoon prayers, and one ghusl for the sunset and evening prayers until this blood stops. And if it is only yellowness, according to narration 7 , only Wudu is required of her.
