Answer

✅Answer: Consider the following narrations:

📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p.129

Abu Jarir asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about how to perform wudu for prayer. He said: Do not be excessive in washing; do not strike the face with water. Wash the face by letting the water flow from the top of your face downward, using your hand to wipe it.

📚 Al-Kafi, vol.3, p.25

Zarara reported: Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) described the wudu of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): He took a cup of water, put his hand in it, poured it over his forehead, let it flow over the sides of his beard, and then wiped the face and forehead with his hand.

📚 Tafsir al-Ayyashi, vol.1, p.298, Hadith 51

Zarara and Bakir reported: Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) described the Prophet's wudu: he took water in a container, poured a handful over his forehead, and washed the face with it.

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol.1, p.55

Zarara reported: Imam Baqir described the Prophet's wudu: he took a handful of water with his right hand, poured it from the top of the face downward, and then wiped both sides of the face with his hand.

✅According to these narrations, although the Quran and some ahadith mention washing the face generally, these detailed narrations prescribe washing from top to bottom. After taking a handful of water, pour it over the forehead and upper face, let it flow along the sides of the beard, and wipe from top to bottom to ensure the face is fully washed.

Washing the face from top to bottom is explicitly prescribed. Washing from bottom to top is not mentioned as permissible, so one should follow the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) to ensure a valid wudu.

✅Regarding hand washing, narrations prescribe washing from top to bottom, but for wiping the head and feet, reverse motion is allowed. Relevant narrations are available at:
