Question 827: Is sacrificing a goat sufficient for 'Aqiqah (a sacrifice on the occasion of a child's birth)?
Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narration:
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 28
Ammar said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the 'Aqiqah for a newborn, what is it like?' He said: 'When the newborn reaches 7 days of age, he is named with the name that God Almighty has named him, and then his head is shaved, and gold or silver equal to its weight is given as charity, and a male sheep is sacrificed on his behalf. So if a male sheep is not found, what is sufficient for the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is sufficient for it, otherwise, a ewe lamb from the largest ewe lambs of that year is sufficient!'
📚Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 485
Muhammad ibn Marid said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the 'Aqiqah.' He said: 'A sheep, a cow, or a camel!'
✅ What is specified in most narrations for 'Aqiqah is a 'kabsh', which means a male sheep (horned or a ram), and in narration 1, it is stated that if a male sheep is not found, what is sufficient for the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha is sufficient.
Now we will review some narrations about what is sufficient for the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 205
Muhammad ibn Muslim asked Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them both) about the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha. The Imam said: 'A fat, large-eyed and large-eared horned male sheep and a six-month-old sheep are sufficient, and a goat that has completed one year and entered its second year is sufficient!'
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 490
Abu Basir said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) whether a ewe (for the Eid sacrifice) is more beloved to you or a goat?' He said: 'If it is a male goat, it is more beloved to me, and if it is a female goat, a ewe is more beloved to me!'
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 491
Shaykh Saduq said: 'It is narrated that for sacrifices, a camel is not sufficient unless it is a thanni, which is one that has completed 5 years and entered its sixth year. And for a goat and a cow, a thanni, which is one that has completed one year and entered its second year, is sufficient. And for a sheep, (at least) a six-month-old from that year is sufficient!'
📚Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 206
Ali (peace be upon him) used to say: 'A five-year-old camel that has entered its sixth year, a one-year-old cow that has entered its second year, a one-year-old goat that has entered its second year, and a six-month-old sheep (are sufficient for the sacrifice).'
📚Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 206
Ibn Sinan said: 'I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: 'A six-month-old sheep (for the Eid sacrifice) is sufficient, but for a goat, nothing is sufficient except one that has completed one year and entered its second year!'
✅ According to the above narrations and others, for 'Aqiqah, besides a male (horned) sheep that is at least six months old, which is specified in many narrations for 'Aqiqah, a (male) goat is also suitable for 'Aqiqah in one of the ranks, but it must have completed at least one year and entered its second year.
