Question 81: Is there a narrational basis for walking backward when leaving the sacred graves of the Ahlul Bayt (AS)?
✅Answer: Consider the following narration:
Safwan said: When I accompanied Imam Sadiq (AS) to Kufa while he was going to visit Mansur Dawaniqi, he stopped at a place and said, ‘Make the camel kneel, for this is the grave of my grandfather, Amir al-Mu’minin (AS).’ I made the camel kneel, and the Imam dismounted, performed ablution, and changed his clothes. He then said, ‘Do as I do.’ After that, he proceeded towards the hills of Najaf and instructed, ‘Walk with your feet close together and lower your head. For every step you take, 100,000 good deeds will be recorded for you, 100,000 sins will be erased, 100,000 degrees will be elevated in Paradise, and 100,000 needs will be fulfilled. You will also receive the reward of every truthful and martyred person, whether they have passed away or been martyred.’
Then, we continued walking with serenity and dignity, reciting glorifications and praises of Allah until we reached the hills. The Imam stood, looked to his right and left, and marked a spot with a stick in his hand, saying, ‘Find it.’ I searched and found traces of a grave. Tears flowed from his blessed eyes, and he recited:
Then he placed himself upon the grave and said:
Then, the Imam stood up and performed several units of prayer at the head of the grave. He said, ‘O Safwan, whoever visits Amir al-Mu’minin (AS) with this visitation and performs the prayer as I did will return home forgiven of all sins. His efforts will be appreciated, and he will be granted the reward of every angel who has visited the Imam.’ I asked, ‘Will he receive the reward of every angel who has visited the Imam?’ The Imam replied, ‘Yes, for every night, a group of 100,000 angels visit him.’
Then, the Imam walked backward while leaving and did not turn his back to the grave. As he left, he said:
I asked, ‘O my master! Do you permit me to inform my companions in Kufa about the location of this grave?’ He replied, ‘Yes,’ and then gave me some coins to repair and maintain the grave.
