Question 705: What are the proofs for the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances, such as ethanol?
Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
Abdullah ibn Sinan said: 'My father asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who lends his shirt to someone he knows eats sea-serpent or drinks wine, and then he returns the shirt. Should he pray in it before washing it?'
He said: 'He should not pray in it until he washes it.'
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 405
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 407
Ali ibn Mahziyar said: 'In a letter from Abdullah ibn Muhammad to Abi al-Hasan (peace be upon him), I read: 'May I be your sacrifice,'
'Zurara narrated from Abi Ja'far (Imam Baqir, peace be upon him) and Abi Abdullah (Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him) regarding wine that gets on a person's shirt, they both said there is no problem in praying in it, for indeed only its drinking has been made unlawful!'
'And it is also narrated from (others besides) Zurara that Abi Abdullah (Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him) said: 'If wine or intoxicating nabidh gets on your shirt, if you know its place, wash it, and if you do not know its place, wash the whole thing, and if you have prayed in it, repeat your prayer.''
'So, inform me which one to act upon?'
Then the Imam wrote with his own hand, and I read it: 'Take and act upon the saying of Abi Abdullah (Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him)!' (meaning the necessity of washing the garment from wine and intoxicating substances).
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 405
Abu Abdullah (Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him)
said: 'If wine or intoxicating nabidh gets on your shirt, if you know its place, wash it, and if you do not know its place, wash the whole thing, and if you have prayed in it, repeat your prayer (perform your prayer again).'
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 405
Khayran the servant said: 'I wrote to him (meaning Imam Ridha, Imam Jawad, or Imam Hadi, peace be upon them) and asked about a shirt that has been touched by wine or pork. Should one pray in it or not? For indeed our companions have differed on this matter!'
'Some say: 'Pray in it, for Allah has (only) forbidden its drinking!' And some say: 'Do not pray in it.'' He said: 'Do not pray in it, for it is 'rijs' (filth and impure)!'
✅In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 90, it is stated:
Translation: 'O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are 'rijs' (filth) from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may be successful.'
✅ In the above verse, wine is called 'rijs,' which in the lexicon means both inner filth and outward impurity.
And in narration 4, wine is also called 'rijs' and praying in it is forbidden, which indicates and confirms the meaning of impurity.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
'Do not pray in a room in which there is wine or an intoxicating substance, for the angels do not enter it, and do not pray in a shirt that has been touched by wine or an intoxicating substance!'
📚Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 279

Zakariya ibn Adam said: 'I asked Abi al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about a drop of wine or intoxicating nabidh that drips into a pot with a lot of meat and broth.'
He said: 'The broth should be discarded, or it can be given to the people of the covenant (Ahl al-Dhimmah) or to a dog.'
And he said: 'Wash the meat and eat it.'
I said: 'Blood has dripped into it!'
He said: 'If Allah wills, fire will consume the blood!'
I said: 'Wine, or nabidh, or blood that has dripped into dough?'
He said: 'It is spoiled!'
I said: 'Can I sell it to Jews and Christians and make it clear to them?'
He said: 'Yes, they consider its drinking lawful!' (meaning drinking wine).
I said: 'Faqqa' (beer), is it the same? When it drips into something?'
He said: 'I do not like to eat it when it has dripped into something of my food!'

Ali ibn Yaqtin narrated from Abi al-Hasan al-Madhi (Imam Kadhim, peace be upon him) that he said: 'Allah Almighty did not make wine unlawful because of its name, but He made it unlawful because of its outcome. So whatever has the outcome of wine, is wine!'

Isma'il ibn Jabir said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'I eat from the food of Jews and Christians!' The Imam said: 'Do not eat!'
Then he said: 'O Isma'il! Do not abandon it because you consider it unlawful, but abandon it out of purification and distance and considering it impure, for indeed in their vessels there is wine and pork!'

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him)
said in a hadith about nabidh:
three times he said: 'An amount that wets a needle makes a large pitcher of water impure!'
📚Qurb al-Isnad, p. 116
Ali ibn Ja'far said: 'I asked Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) about drinking from a wooden or glass vessel in which wine has been drunk.' The Imam said: 'There is no problem if it is washed.'
✅As is clear in the above narrations and their likes, wine, nabidh, beer (faqqa'), and other types of intoxicating substances are explicitly or implicitly considered impure, and praying in them is forbidden, and there is a command to wash them.
✅In contrast to these narrations, several other narrations have also been reported that state there is no problem with praying in clothes or on a body stained with wine, and in reality, those few narrations appear to contradict these narrations.
✅However, based on the criteria for preference found in the narrations, the following points can be noted:
1️⃣ Allah Almighty in verse 90 of Surah Al-Ma'idah called wine 'rijs,' which, although one of its meanings is inner filth in addition to impurity, due to narration 4 and others that also mention the outward impurity of wine and the prohibition of praying in it because it is 'rijs,' it can be considered that the narrations indicating impurity are in agreement with this verse of the Qur'an.
2️⃣ One of the important narrative criteria for preferring a hadith is to choose narrations that are contrary to the majority (Sunni) view. Given the belief of many Sunnis in the ritual purity of wine and intoxicating substances, and the involvement of the Umayyad caliphs and their courtiers with wine and intoxicating substances, and the fact that the majority consider nabidh and beer (faqqa') to be lawful and allow praying in them, the few narrations that permit praying in clothes and on a body stained with wine and intoxicating substances can be considered to have been said out of dissimulation (taqiyyah). Therefore, the numerous hadiths indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances are actionable.
3️⃣ This contradiction in narrations also existed during the time of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), and this question was also raised by the companions of the Ahl al-Bayt as to which group of narrations is actionable. And we see that, for instance, in narrations 2 and 4, the Ahl al-Bayt themselves have resolved the contradiction for us and have introduced the hadiths indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances and the non-permissibility of praying in them as the ones to act upon.
4️⃣ The criterion of being well-known among the companions for preferring a narration has been explained to us by the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), and it is completely clear that the hadiths indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances have always been more well-known among the Shi'a, and based on this criterion as well, the hadiths indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances are actionable.
5️⃣ Given the principle of caution, which is recommended by the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), there is no doubt that the hadiths indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances are preferred and actionable.
✅ It has been proven today that ethanol alcohol is considered one of the intoxicating beverages, and with the existence of these numerous narrations indicating the impurity of wine and intoxicating substances, mixing it with medicines and perfumes and rubbing or spraying it on prayer clothes, mosques, and the shrines of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) under the pretext of disinfection and others has no basis. And something that in the hadith in 📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 414, Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was not even willing to look at, should not be considered a purifier for a mosque and prayer clothes by his lovers.
✅ We hope that we can forbid all lovers of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) from using intoxicating substances and instead recommend to them the use of pure disinfectants, such as vinegar mixed with water and others.
