Question 77: What is 'Maqtal' and 'Maqtal Recitation'?
✅Answer: The word 'Maqtal' (plural: 'Maqatil') literally means 'place of killing' or 'battlefield.' However, in historical studies, it refers to written reports and narratives about the killing or martyrdom of significant historical figures. Books detailing the events and circumstances of Imam Hussain’s (AS) martyrdom are also referred to as 'Maqtal.'
Not all Maqatil are equally reliable, and one must carefully study and verify them to avoid attributing false or inappropriate statements to the family of the Prophet (PBUH).
Unfortunately, instead of citing authentic sources, some individuals today narrate unreliable and unfounded accounts regarding the tragedies of the Ahlul Bayt (AS). We remind the followers of the Quran and the Prophet’s family that there is no difference between attributing an unauthenticated ruling in Islamic jurisprudence to the Ahlul Bayt and attributing false narratives about their tragedies.
We must ensure that our primary references for recounting these tragedies are the hadiths from the Imams (AS) and then reliable historical reports that align with those narrations.
One of the narrations about the 'Maqtal' of Imam Hussain (AS) is a hadith recorded by Sheikh Saduq in 'Amali' (p. 151), narrated from Imam Sadiq (AS), containing important and key details.
Additionally, reciting speculative and sometimes inappropriate poetic verses, known as 'Zaban-e-Hal' (imaginary dialogues), that are falsely attributed to the Ahlul Bayt lacks religious legitimacy. Such practices mix truth with the poet’s assumptions and should be avoided. It is better for believers to rely on authentic narrations, verified historical accounts, and accurate poetry without exaggeration.
The greatness of Imam Hussain’s (AS) tragedy is not merely due to the extent of the injustices inflicted upon him. Some might argue that similar injustices have occurred in other regions or to other groups. What makes the tragedy of our Master so profound is his unparalleled status and value. Consider the following narration:
Imam Ali (AS) said:
'The greater the value of something sought after, the greater the loss in its absence.'
📚Gharar al-Hikam, p. 535
This hadith indicates that one of the reasons for the immense sorrow over the martyrdom of Sayyid al-Shuhada (AS) is his lofty and indescribable status. There is no need for eulogists and reciters to, God forbid, fabricate stories and poetry to evoke tears. Instead, recognizing his exalted position should be enough that, upon simply hearing 'Hussain (AS) was martyred thirsty,' his lovers are overwhelmed with tears and grief.
This brief response does not allow for further elaboration. However, our recommendation is to base mourning gatherings on authentic historical facts, reliable poetry, and, foremost, the narrations of the Ahlul Bayt (AS). As much as possible, reports should be read directly from credible sources without alterations. Avoiding speculative poetry prevents falsehood from being mixed with truth and ensures that no lies are attributed to this noble family.
أَنَا قَتِیلُ الْعَبْرَةِ لَا یَذْکُرُنِی مُؤْمِنٌ إِلَّا بَکَی
Moreover, by purifying our hearts from sin, we should strive to reach a state where even the mere remembrance of Imam Hussain (AS) moves us to tears, as he himself said:
