Question 64: Is ethanol, wine, intoxicants, and are they impure?
✅Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 412
Imam Kazim (AS) said: Indeed, Allah (SWT) did not prohibit wine because of its name, but rather because of its consequences and results. Therefore, anything that causes intoxication and the loss of reason is considered wine.
📚Tahdheeb, Vol. 1, p. 278
Imam Sadiq (AS) said: Do not pray in a room where wine or any intoxicating drink exists, because the angels do not enter such a room, and do not pray in a garment that has been touched by wine or any other intoxicating drink until you wash it.
📚Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 405
Imam Sadiq (AS) said: If your clothes have been touched by wine or an intoxicating drink, if you know the place where it touched, wash that area. If you do not know the place, wash the entire garment, and if you have prayed in it, repeat your prayer.
📚Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 413
Imam Sadiq (AS) in the narration of Nabidh (date drink) said three times: The amount of Nabidh that moistens the tip of the kohl stick makes a large jug of water impure.
✅Other narrations also confirm the impurity of wine, Nabidh, and intoxicants.
What is now established is that ‘ethanol,’ which is a type of alcohol, has the property of causing ‘intoxication and drunkenness,’ and according to the above narrations and other hadiths, it is considered ‘intoxicating’ and ‘wine,’ and therefore, it is considered ‘impure.’
✅Note: The Ahl al-Bayt (AS) did not prohibit alcohol itself, but rather every intoxicating and mind-altering substance is prohibited, and among the various types of alcohol, only those that are intoxicating, as per the above narrations, are considered impure and prohibited.
