Question 59: When I lifted my head from the prostration (sajdah) during prayer and sat down, I doubted whether it was the first sajdah or the second. What should be done in this situation?

✅ Answer: Refer to the following narration:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 349

Translation: Halabi said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about someone who doubts whether they performed one sajdah or two. The Imam said: Perform another sajdah, and after finishing the prayer, there is no obligation for sajdah sahw.

✅ Note 1: According to the following narration, if one has moved past the place of sajdah and then doubts, they should ignore it:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 344

Translation: Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: For anything where the place has passed, and you doubt it, pass it as it is (do not pay attention to it).

✅ Note 2: If one later realizes that their doubt was unfounded and they performed an extra sajdah, according to narration 3⃣, it is not necessary to repeat the prayer, but according to narration 4⃣, they must perform sajdah sahw:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 156

Translation: Mansur bin Hazim said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man who prays and then remembers that he performed an extra sajdah. The Imam said: The prayer is not repeated because of one sajdah, but it is repeated because of (adding or omitting) one rak'ah (or ruku').

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 155

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: For any addition or omission that occurs to you, perform two sajdah sahw.
