Question 503: Does washing a ritually impure (najis) garment in an automatic washing machine purify it?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 250
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a garment that gets urine on it.' The Imam said: 'Wash it twice in a basin, and if you wash it in flowing water, wash it once.'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 251
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them both) about urine that gets on a garment.' He said: 'Wash it twice.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 55
Husayn ibn Abi al-Ala' said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a child who urinates on a garment.' He said: 'Pour a little water on it and then squeeze it (to remove the rinse water).'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 17
Ibn Mughirah said: 'I said to Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him): 'Is there a limit for istinja' (removing feces)?' He said: 'No, what is there (of the substance of impurity) should be removed and cleaned.'
I said: 'What is there (of the substance of impurity) is removed and cleaned but its smell remains!' He said: 'No attention should be paid to the smell.'
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 272
Isa ibn Abi Mansur said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'A woman gets menstrual blood on her garment, so she washes it but the trace of the blood remains on her garment!''
The Imam said: 'Tell her to dye it with red clay so that it mixes (and is not visible).'
✅ This means that the remaining color or smell after purification has been performed is not a problem, and the garment is purified.
✅ 'Ghusl' means washing, which in the case of a najis garment, means removing the substance of the impurity if it exists, either separately or during washing, and rinsing the garment with pure water, wringing out its rinse water, and repeating this action for some impurities.
✅ The way most automatic washing machines work is that they first remove the dirt from the clothes with water mixed with powder. But because such water is mixed, it does not play a role in purifying them, although it usually removes the substance of the impurity.
After this stage, by rinsing the clothes with pure water and then removing the rinse water and draining that water, it performs the same action that we do to purify a garment by hand. And because this action is done with a small amount of water, according to the first narration, it is necessary to repeat this action for different impurities and to rinse again and remove its rinse water. In this case, the najis clothes are purified, and only the rinsing of the clothes with pure water and the necessary repetition must be observed.
✅ The different performance of some washing machines or the clothes not being rinsed due to low water pressure or not performing the necessary number of washes with pure water and the lack of other necessary conditions for purifying a najis garment will cause a defect in the purification of the clothes due to the violation of the necessary narrative conditions, which must be taken into consideration.
✅ What is important is that the conditions that are mentioned in the narrations for purifying a najis garment with a small amount of water are observed. And if these conditions are carried out by the washing machine, the najis clothes are purified, and there is no need for scrupulousness in this regard. And of course, the necessary number of rinses for the najis garment must be set in the washing machine's settings.
✅ It is obvious that if after the completion of the wash, it is observed that the substance of the impurity has remained on a garment, the necessary purification has not been performed, and the clothes must be purified again.
