✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

1 أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ الطَّبْرِسِيُّ فِي الْإِحْتِجَاجِ عَنْ مَوْلَانَا صَاحِبِ الزَّمَانِ أَنَّهُ كَتَبَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ فِي جَوَابِ مَسَائِلِهِ حَيْثُ سَأَلَهُ عَنْ وَدَاعِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ- مَتَى يَكُونُ قَدِ اخْتَلَفَ فِيهِ أَصْحَابُنَا فَبَعْضُهُمْ يَقُولُ يُقْرَأُ فِي آخِرِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْهُ وَ بَعْضُهُمْ يَقُولُ هُوَ فِي آخِرِ يَوْمٍ مِنْهُ إِذَا رُئِيَ هِلَالُ شَوَّالٍ التَّوْقِيعَ الْعَمَلُ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فِي لَيَالِيهِ وَ الْوَدَاعُ يَقَعُ فِي آخِرِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْهُ فَإِنْ خَافَ أَنْ يَنْقُصَ الشَّهْرُ جَعَلَهُ فِي لَيْلَتَيْنِ.

Himyari, in a writing, had asked Imam al-Zaman, peace be upon him, about when the Farewell of the month of Ramadan is performed, (because) indeed the companions have differed about it, and some of them say that the Farewell is recited on the last night of the month of Ramadan, and some say that it is recited on the last day of the month of Ramadan, when the crescent of the month of Shawwal is seen;

The Imam's reply was issued as follows:

The action in the month of Ramadan is in its nights, and the Farewell takes place on its last night, and if one fears that the month is incomplete (i.e., 29 days), he should perform the Farewell on two nights.

✅This means that on the 29th night, he recites the Farewell supplications, and if by chance the crescent is not sighted and the month is 30 days, he also performs the Farewell on the 30th night.

✅The Farewell of the month of Ramadan consists of supplications that are recited on the last night of the month and will be presented through several hadiths, God willing:

2 Jabir ibn Abdillah al-Ansari said: I entered upon the Messenger of God, peace be upon him and his family, on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

When he saw me, he said: O Jabir, this is the last Friday of the month of Ramadan, so bid it farewell and say:

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنْ صِيَامِنَا إِيَّاهُ فَإِنْ جَعَلْتَهُ فَاجْعَلْنِي مَرْحُوماً وَ لَا تَجْعَلْنِي مَحْرُوماً

For whoever says this, he will achieve one of two good things: either the month of Ramadan of the next year, or divine forgiveness and mercy.

✅According to the text of the above hadith, it is clear that this Farewell is performed on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.

3 Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When it is the last night of the month of Ramadan, say:

اللَّهُمَّ هَذَا شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنَ وَ قَدْ تَصَرَّمَ وَ أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ أَنْ يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ مِنْ لَيْلَتَيْ هَذِهِ أَوْ يَتَصَرَّمَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ وَ لَكَ قِبَلِي تَبِعَةٌ أَوْ ذَنْبٌ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُعَذِّبَنِي بِهِ يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ

4 Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever bids farewell to the month of Ramadan on the last night of the month of Ramadan and says:

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنْ صِيَامِي لِشَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ يَطْلُعَ فَجْرُ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ غَفَرْتَ لِي

God will forgive him before he enters the morning and will grant him repentance and return to God.

5 One of the best and most comprehensive Farewell supplications for the month of Ramadan is supplication 45 of Sahifa Sajjadiyya, which is highly recommended for all believers to read on the 29th and 30th nights of the month of Ramadan.

6 Abu Basir narrated this supplication from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, regarding the Farewell of the month of Ramadan:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّکَ قُلْتَ فِی کِتَابِکَ الْمُنْزَلِ شَهْرُ رَمَضانَ الَّذی أُنْزِلَ فِیهِ الْقُرْآنُ وَ هَذَا شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ و قَدْ تَصَرَّمَ فَأَسْأَلُکَ بِوَجْهِکَ الْکَرِیمِ وَ کَلِمَاتِکَ التَّامَّةِ إِنْ کَانَ بَقِیَ عَلَیَّ ذَنْبٌ لَمْ تَغْفِرْهُ لِی أَوْ تُرِیدُ أَنْ تُعَذِّبَنِی عَلَیْهِ أَوْ تُقَایِسَنِی بِهِ أَنْ یَطْلُعَ فَجْرُ هَذِهِ اللَّیْلَةِ أَوْ یَتَصَرَّمَ هَذَا الشَّهْرُ إِلَّا وَ قَدْ غَفَرْتَهُ لِی یَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِینَ

اللَّهُمَّ لَکَ الْحَمْدُ بِمَحَامِدِکَ کُلِّهَا أَوَّلِهَا وَ آخِرِهَا مَا قُلْتَ لِنَفْسِکَ مِنْهَا وَ مَا قَالَ الْخَلَائِقُ الْحَامِدُونَ الْمُجْتَهِدُونَ الْمَعْدُودُونَ الْمُوَقِّرُونَ ذِکْرَکَ وَ الشُّکْرَ لَکَ الَّذِینَ أَعَنْتَهُمْ عَلَی أَدَاءِ حَقِّکَ مِنْ أَصْنَافِ خَلْقِکَ مِنَ الْمَلَائِکَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِینَ وَ النَّبِیِّینَ وَ الْمُرْسَلِینَ وَ أَصْنَافِ النَّاطِقِینَ وَ الْمُسَبِّحِینَ لَکَ مِنْ جَمِیعِ الْعَالَمِینَ عَلَی أَنَّکَ بَلَّغْتَنَا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ وَ عَلَیْنَا مِنْ نِعَمِکَ وَ عِنْدَنَا مِنْ قَسْمِکَ وَ إِحْسَانِکَ وَ تَظَاهُرِ امْتِنَانِکَ فَبِذَلِکَ لَکَ مُنْتَهَی الْحَمْدِ الْخَالِدِ الدَّائِمِ الرَّاکِدِ الْمُخَلَّدِ السَّرْمَدِ الَّذِی لَا یَنْفَدُ طُولَ الْأَبَدِ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُکَ أَعَنْتَنَا عَلَیْهِ حَتَّی قَضَیْنَا صِیَامَهُ وَ قِیَامَهُ مِنْ صَلَاةٍ وَ مَا کَانَ مِنَّا فِیهِ مِنْ بِرٍّ أَوْ شُکْرٍ أَوْ ذِکْرٍ

اللَّهُمَّ فَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنَّا بِأَحْسَنِ قَبُولِکَ وَ تَجَاوُزِکَ وَ عَفْوِکَ وَ صَفْحِکَ وَ غُفْرَانِکَ وَ حَقِیقَةِ رِضْوَانِکَ حَتَّی تُظْفِرَنَا فِیهِ بِکُلِّ خَیْرٍ مَطْلُوبٍ وَ جَزِیلِ عَطَاءٍ مَوْهُوبٍ وَ تُوَقِّیَنَا فِیهِ مِنْ کُلِّ مَرْهُوبٍ أَوْ بَلَاءٍ مَجْلُوبٍ أَوْ ذَنْبٍ مَکْسُوبٍ

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَسْأَلُکَ بِعَظِیمِ مَا سَأَلَکَ بِهِ أَحَدٌ مِنْ خَلْقِکَ مِنْ کَرِیمِ أَسْمَائِکَ وَ جَمِیلِ ثَنَائِکَ وَ خَاصَّةِ دُعَائِکَ أَنْ تُصَلِّیَ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ شَهْرَنَا هَذَا أَعْظَمَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مَرَّ عَلَیْنَا مُنْذُ أَنْزَلْتَنَا إِلَی الدُّنْیَا بَرَکَةً فِی عِصْمَةِ دِینِی وَ خَلَاصِ نَفْسِی وَ قَضَاءِ حَوَائِجِی وَ تُشَفِّعَنِی فِی مَسَائِلِی وَ تَمَامِ النِّعْمَةِ عَلَیَّ وَ صَرْفِ السُّوءِ عَنِّی وَ لِبَاسِ الْعَافِیَةِ لِی فِیهِ وَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَنِی بِرَحْمَتِکَ مِمَّنْ خِرْتَ لَهُ لَیْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ وَ جَعَلْتَهَا لَهُ خَیْراً مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ فِی أَعْظَمِ الْأَجْرِ وَ کَرَائِمِ الذُّخْرِ وَ حُسْنِ الشُّکْرِ وَ طُولِ الْعُمُرِ وَ دَوَامِ الْیُسْرِ

اللَّهُمَّ وَ أَسْأَلُکَ بِرَحْمَتِکَ وَ طَوْلِکَ وَ عَفْوِکَ وَ نَعْمَائِکَ وَ جَلَالِکَ وَ قَدِیمِ إِحْسَانِکَ وَ امْتِنَانِکَ أَنْ لَا تَجْعَلَهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَّا لِشَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّی تُبَلِّغَنَاهُ مِنْ قَابِلٍ عَلَی أَحْسَنِ حَالٍ وَ تُعَرِّفَنِی هِلَالَهُ مَعَ النَّاظِرِینَ إِلَیْهِ وَ الْمُعْتَرِفِینَ لَهُ فِی أَعْفَی عَافِیَتِکَ وَ أَنْعَمِ نِعْمَتِکَ وَ أَوْسَعِ رَحْمَتِکَ وَ أَجْزَلِ قَسْمِکَ یَا رَبِّیَ الَّذِی لَیْسَ لِی رَبٌّ غَیْرُهُ لَا یَکُونُ هَذَا الْوَدَاعُ مِنِّی لَهُ وَدَاعَ فَنَاءٍ وَ لَا آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنِّی لِلِّقَاءِ حَتَّی تُرِیَنِیهِ مِنْ قَابِلٍ فِی أَوْسَعِ النِّعَمِ وَ أَفْضَلِ الرَّجَاءِ وَ أَنَا لَکَ عَلَی أَحْسَنِ الْوَفَاءِ إِنَّکَ سَمِیعُ الدُّعَاءِ

اللَّهُمَّ اسْمَعْ دُعَائِی وَ ارْحَمْ تَضَرُّعِی وَ تَذَلُّلِی لَکَ و اسْتِکَانَتِی و تَوَکُّلِی عَلَیْکَ و أَنَا لَکَ مُسَلِّمٌ لَا أَرْجُو نَجَاحاً وَ لَا مُعَافَاةً وَ لَا تَشْرِیفاً وَ لَا تَبْلِیغاً إِلَّا بِکَ وَ مِنْکَ فَامْنُنْ عَلَیَّ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُکَ و تَقَدَّسَتْ أَسْمَاؤُکَ بِتَبْلِیغِی شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ وَ أَنَا مُعَافًی مِنْ کُلِّ مَکْرُوهٍ وَ مَحْذُورٍ وَ مِنْ جَمِیعِ الْبَوَائِقِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِی أَعَانَنَا عَلَی صِیَامِ هَذَا الشَّهْرِ وَ قِیَامِهِ حَتَّی بَلَّغَنِی آخِرَ لَیْلَةٍ مِنْهُ

✅As mentioned in the previous section, the Farewell supplications are recited on the last night of the month of Ramadan, i.e., the 30th night of the month of Ramadan, and if there is a fear of the month being incomplete, i.e., being 29 days, which is usually the case, the Farewell is performed on two nights, i.e., the 29th and 30th nights of the month of Ramadan.

✅It is reiterated that the very comprehensive and unique supplication 45 of Sahifa Sajjadiyya should be used for the Farewell of the month of Ramadan.
