Condemnation of sleeping alone

1 Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever spends the night alone in a room, or a house, or a village, should say:'

اللَّهُمَّ آنِسْ وَحْشَتِي وَ أَعِنِّي عَلَى وَحْدَتِي

📚 Al-Mahasin, p. 370, hadith 122

2 Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever defecates on a grave, or urinates while standing, or urinates in stagnant water, or walks in one shoe, or drinks water while standing (at night), or secludes himself alone in a room and spends the night with grease from meat (on him), and as a result something from Satan reaches him, he will not leave him except by the will of God, and the fastest state that Satan has with a person is when he is in one of these states.'

3 عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ أَشَدُّ مَا يَهُمُّ بِالْإِنْسَانِ إِذَا كَانَ وَحْدَهُ فَلَا تَبِيتَنَّ وَحْدَكَ وَ لَا تُسَافِرَنَّ وَحْدَكَ

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 534

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'The greatest intention and purpose that Satan has for a person is when he is alone, so never spend the night alone (do not sleep alone) and never travel alone.'

4 ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: نَزَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ فَقَالَ يَا مَيْمُونُ- مَنْ يَرْقُدُ مَعَكَ بِاللَّيْلِ أَ مَعَكَ غُلَامٌ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ فَلَا تَنَمْ وَحْدَكَ فَإِنَّ أَجْرَأَ مَا يَكُونُ الشَّيْطَانُ عَلَى الْإِنْسَانِ إِذَا كَانَ وَحْدَهُ

Maymun ibn Qaddah said: 'I came to Imam Baqir (peace be upon him). The Imam said to me: 'O Maymun, who sleeps with you at night? Is there a servant with you?' I said: 'No.' The Imam said: 'Do not sleep alone, for indeed Satan has the greatest courage against a person when he is alone.'

5 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ أَشَدُّ مَا يَهُمُّ بِالْإِنْسَانِ حِينَ يَكُونُ وَحْدَهُ خَالِياً لَا أَرَى أَنْ يَرْقُدَ وَحْدَهُ

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, the most intense intention and purpose that Satan has for a person is when he is in seclusion alone. May I never see a person sleeping alone.'

6 عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَبِيتُ فِي بَيْتٍ وَحْدَهُ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ وَ إِنِ اضْطُرَّ إِلَى ذَلِكَ فَلَا بَأْسَ وَ لَكِنْ يُكْثِرُ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ فِي مَنَامِهِ مَا اسْتَطَاع

Sama'ah said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who spends the night alone in a room; the Imam said: 'I dislike it, but if he is forced and compelled to do so, there is no problem, but when he sleeps, he should remember God as much as he can.'

7 إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى قَالَ: ثَلَاثَةٌ يُتَخَوَّفُ مِنْهَا الْجُنُونُ التَّغَوُّطُ بَيْنَ الْقُبُورِ وَ الْمَشْيُ فِي خُفٍّ وَاحِدٍ وَ الرَّجُلُ يَنَامُ وَحْدَهُ.

Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) said: 'Three people are feared to be afflicted with madness: a person who defecates among graves, a person who walks in one shoe, and a person who sleeps alone.'

8 عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثَةً مِنْهُمُ النَّائِمُ فِي بَيْتٍ وَحْدَهُ.

Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cursed three people, one of whom is a person who sleeps alone in a room.'

9 عَلِيُّ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فِي كِتَابِهِ عَنْ أَخِيهِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ لَهُ أَنْ يَنَامَ فِي الْبَيْتِ وَحْدَهُ قَالَ تُكْرَهُ الْخَلْوَةُ وَ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ.

📚 Masa'il Ali ibn Ja'far, p. 175

Ali ibn Ja'far said: 'I asked Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) whether it is suitable for a person to sleep alone in a room? He said: 'Seclusion is disliked, and I do not like for a person to do this.'

✅ In the above narrations, seclusion in a place alone, traveling alone, and sleeping alone are all prohibited, and it is appropriate to act upon them. And a person who is forced to sleep alone in a place should act upon hadiths 1 and 6. If Allah wills.

✅ We should not make our children sleep alone in a room, under the pretext of becoming independent and based on the advice of consultants who are unfamiliar with the rulings of the religion, and we should not leave them alone in a secluded and empty room.

وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْرَ
