Question 469: Can a person who is fasting perform 'hijama' (cupping) during the month of Ramadan?
Answer
✅Answer: Please study the following narrations:
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 109
Halabi said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person, can he perform 'hijamah'? He said: 'I fear for him, does he not fear for himself?' I said: 'What is there to fear for him?' He said: 'Fainting (and becoming weak) or that the bile is stimulated and overcomes him!'
I said: 'What do you say if he is strong and does not fear anything?'
He said: 'Yes, if he wishes (he can perform 'hijamah').'

Husayn ibn Abi al-'Ala' said:
I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about 'hijamah' for a fasting person, he said: 'Yes, if he does not fear weakness.'

Ibn Babawayh (Sheikh Saduq) said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) disliked that a fasting person performs 'hijamah' out of fear that he may faint and become weak, and as a result, break his fast!

Said al-A'raj said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) whether a fasting person can perform 'hijamah'? He said: 'There is no problem unless he fears weakness for himself.'

📚Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 260
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
It is not objectionable for a fasting person to perform 'hijamah' except in the month of Ramadan, for I dislike that he unknowingly exposes himself to destruction and ruin, unless he does not fear for himself. And when we wish to perform 'hijamah' in the month of Ramadan, we perform it at night.
✅The prohibition of performing 'hijamah' during the days of the month of Ramadan for a fasting person is clear in the above narrations, and for one who does not fear weakness and fainting, its permission has been explicitly stated. And of course, in hadith 6, it is clear that the 'hijamah' of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in the month of Ramadan is performed at night, and it is better for us, in emulation of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), to also perform 'hijamah' at night if we wish to do so during the month of Ramadan, even though the one who does not fear weakness and fainting for himself has permission to perform it during the day in the month of Ramadan as well.
