Question 451: Is ritual washing (ghusl) recommended on the first night of Ramadan?

1 عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ
عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ غُسْلِ الْجُمُعَةِ........ وَ غُسْلُ أَوَّلِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مُسْتَحَبٌّ

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'The ghusl on the first night of Ramadan is recommended.'
2 عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ طَاوُسٍ فِي كِتَابِ الْإِقْبَالِ قَالَ رَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي قُرَّةَ فِي كِتَابِ عَمَلِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ إِلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: يُسْتَحَبُّ الْغُسْلُ فِي أَوَّلِ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ- وَ لَيْلَةِ النِّصْفِ مِنْهُ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'It is recommended to perform ghusl on the first and the fifteenth night of the month of Ramadan.'
3 عَنِ الصَّادِقِ قَالَ: مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ أَوَّلَ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فِي نَهَرٍ جَارٍ وَ يَصُبُّ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثِينَ كَفّاً مِنَ الْمَاءِ طَهُرَ إِلَى شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ قَابِلٍ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever performs ghusl on the first night of Ramadan in a flowing river and pours 30 handfuls of water on his head will be pure and clean until Ramadan of the next year.'
4 عَنِ الصَّادِقِ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ لَا تَكُونَ بِهِ الْحِكَّةُ فَلْيَغْتَسِلْ أَوَّلَ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ- فَإِنَّهُ مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ أَوَّلَ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْهُ لَا یُصیبهُ حِكَّةٌ إِلَى شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ مِنْ قَابِلٍ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever wishes not to have itching on his body should perform ghusl on the first night of Ramadan, because whoever performs ghusl on the first night of Ramadan will not be afflicted with itching until the next Ramadan.'

Ali (peace be upon him) said: 'On the first night of Ramadan, it is recommended for a man to go to his wife, because of the saying of God: 'It has been made lawful for you on the night of the fast to have sexual relations with your wives,' and 'rafath' (having sexual relations) is cohabitation.'

Hammad ibn Isa said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person who complains about his ear (has an earache) and puts medicine in it.' He said: 'There is no problem.'

4 عَلِيُّ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فِي كِتَابِهِ عَنْ أَخِيهِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ علیهماالسلام قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّائِمِ هَلْ يَصْلُحُ لَهُ أَنْ يَصُبَّ فِي أُذُنِهِ الدُّهْنَ قَالَ إِذَا لَمْ يَدْخُلْ حَلْقَهُ فَلَا بَأْسَ.

Ali ibn Ja'far in his book narrated from his brother Imam Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon them) that he asked him about a fasting person
if it is permissible for him to put oil in his ear. He said: 'There is no objection if it does not reach his throat!'

✅The permission to put medicine and oil in the ear for a fasting person, provided that it does not enter his throat, is obtained from the above narrations, to be the basis for the actions of those who, when they honorably visit the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in front of their noble shrines, recite the Ziyarat Jamia Kabira, addressing them:
�آخِذٌ بِقَوْلِکُمْ عَامِلٌ بِأَمْرِکُمْ مُسْتَجِیرٌ بِکُمْ
☘️'I take your words and act upon your commands, and I seek refuge in you.'
