Question 429: Is it permissible to repeat Surah Al-Hamd or Surah Al-Tawhid multiple times in an obligatory prayer?
                Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 70
Umar ibn Yazid said: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'Can I recite two surahs in one rak'ah?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'But is it not said that you should give each surah its due from the bowing and prostration?' He said: 'That is for the obligatory prayer (in which one surah is recited after Al-Hamd in each rak'ah), but in the supererogatory prayer, there is no problem.'
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 627.
The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: 'When you are in prayer (obligatory), give each surah its due from the bowing and prostration.'
(Meaning that each single surah in an obligatory prayer has one bowing and two prostrations, so naturally, one can only recite one surah per rak'ah).
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 93
Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) about a person who recites two surahs in one rak'ah. The Imam said: 'If it is a supererogatory prayer, there is no problem, but it is not proper in an obligatory prayer.'
✅ What is mentioned in Shia narrations is that in an obligatory prayer, one Al-Hamd and one surah should be recited, and there is no tradition or narration from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) for reciting Al-Hamd or a surah two or more times in an obligatory prayer. In supererogatory prayers, according to multiple narrations, a sample of which is mentioned above, it is permissible to recite several surahs in one rak'ah or even to repeat a single surah. In some of the narrated supererogatory prayers from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), a single surah after Al-Hamd is even mentioned to be repeated up to a thousand times. However, repeating Al-Hamd and a surah in an obligatory prayer has no tradition or narration from the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).
✅ However, according to the narrations, repeating the verses of a surah while reciting it is permissible. Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 602
In a hadith, al-Zuhri said: Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him), when he recited 'Maliki yawmi al-din' (The Master of the Day of Judgment), he would repeat it to the point that he almost passed out!
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 93.
📚 Masa'il Ali ibn Ja'far, p. 167
Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about a person who is reciting in an obligatory prayer. Can he cry and repeat a verse when he reaches a verse that contains a warning and a threat? The Imam said: 'He can repeat the Quran as much as he wants, and if crying overcomes him, there is no problem.'
✅ It is observed that repeating verses in an obligatory prayer is permitted in the tradition and hadiths of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), but repeating the whole surah and repeating Al-Hamd has no tradition for the obligatory prayer. In other words, repeating Al-Hamd and the surah after Al-Hamd in an obligatory prayer is not a tradition, but repeating the verses of Al-Hamd and the surah is a tradition.
