Question 358: Is raising the hands for the Takbirat (pl. of Takbir) specific to obligatory prayers, or are the hands also raised for supererogatory prayers?
Answer
✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 65
Translation: Safwan said: 'I saw Imam Sadegh, peace be upon him, when he said the Takbir in prayer, he would raise his two hands to the point that they were close to his two ears.'
[1]: Al-Kawthar, verse 2
📚 Tahdhib, vol. 2, p. 66
Translation: Imam Sadegh, peace be upon him, said about the verse 'So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice': 'It is the raising of your two hands until they are opposite your face.'
✅Numerous hadiths have been narrated about raising the hands to the face for the Takbirat of prayer, and none of them specify it for obligatory prayers; rather, in many of them, it is mentioned for prayer in general. Therefore, raising the hands is for the Takbirat of both obligatory and supererogatory prayers.
✅In addition to this, specific evidence has also been mentioned in narrations that the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, mentioned raising the hands for the Takbir of supererogatory prayers. For example:
3 In the story of Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, entering the mosque of Kufa, which Abu Hamza al-Thumali narrated, Abu Hamza said:
📚 Bihar, vol. 100, p. 388
Translation: 'Then Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, stood next to the seventh pillar and then raised his two index fingers until they reached the soft part of his ears and lowered them while saying the Takbir. So (upon seeing this), all the hair on my body stood up, and then he prayed four units (i.e., two times two units) in which he performed the bowing and prostration excellently. Until the end of the hadith....'
📚 Bihar, vol. 87, p. 240
Translation: 'Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, would pray two light units before the night prayer. And in these two units, in the first unit (after Surah al-Hamd), he would recite 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad' and in the second unit (after al-Hamd), he would recite 'Qul Ya Ayyuha al-Kafirun' and he would raise his two hands for the Takbir........(and then he would recite a specific supplication)'
✅So, raising the hands for the Takbirat of prayer, especially the opening Takbir (Takbirat al-Ihram), is not specific to obligatory prayers. In all supererogatory and obligatory prayers, for the Takbirat, especially the opening Takbir, the two hands are raised to the face.
