Question 356: Are supererogatory prayers recited audibly or in a whisper?

Answer
✅ Answer: Please reflect on the following narrations:
📚 Tahdhib Vol. 2, p. 124
Ya'qub ibn Salim asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who gets up at the end of the night and raises his voice with the recitation of the Qur'an; the Imam said: It is fitting for a man, when he prays at night, to let his family hear so that whoever wants to get up, gets up, and whoever intends to move, moves.
📚 Tahdhib Vol. 2, p. 289
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The tradition in the daytime prayer is to recite in a whisper and the tradition in the nighttime prayer is to recite audibly.
📚 Tahdhib Vol. 2, p. 289
Translation: Sama'ah said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Can a person recite his recitation audibly and loudly in the daytime supererogatory prayer? The Imam said: Yes.
📚 'Uyun Akhbar al-Reza (peace be upon him) Vol. 2, p. 182
Translation: Raja' ibn Abi al-Dhahhak narrated that Imam Reza (peace be upon him) used to recite the recitation of the Maghrib, 'Isha', night prayer, Shafa', Witr, and Fajr prayers audibly and loudly, and he used to recite the recitation in the Dhuhr and 'Asr prayers in a whisper.
✅ The tradition of audible recitation in the night prayers and the tradition of whispered recitation in the daytime prayers are established in the above narrations, and their apparent meaning covers both the obligatory and supererogatory prayers.
✅ In hadith 3️⃣, the permission to recite the daytime supererogatory prayers audibly is clearly mentioned, even though the tradition is to recite them in a whisper.
✅ Regarding the night supererogatory prayers, the tradition of audible recitation is established, but it is not established that it is among the obligatory traditions, and in the first hadith, the word 'yanbaghi,' meaning 'it is fitting,' is used.
✅ The Fajr prayer, despite being a daytime prayer, is recited audibly due to a reason mentioned in the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).
✅ The ruling for intentionally and unintentionally reciting audibly or in a whisper in the obligatory prayers has separate rulings and is different from the supererogatory ones. Refer to question 158 of the channel.
