1 زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْبَاقِرِ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ خَمْساً وَ ثَلَاثِينَ صَلَاةً مِنْهَا صَلَاةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَرَضَهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ وَ هِيَ الْجُمُعَةُ و وَضَعَهَا عَنْ تِسْعَةٍ عَنِ الصَّغِيرِ وَ الْكَبِيرِ وَ الْمَجْنُونِ وَ الْمُسَافِرِ وَ الْعَبْدِ وَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَ الْمَرِيضِ وَ الْأَعْمَى وَ مَنْ كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ فَرْسَخَيْنِ

Translation: Imam Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, Allah has made 35 prayers obligatory upon the people from this Friday to the next. Among them is one prayer that He has made obligatory in a congregation, and that is Friday prayer, and He has lifted it from nine people: a child, an old man, a lunatic, a traveler, a slave, a woman, a sick person, a blind person, and someone who is two farsakhs away.'

2 وَ خَطَبَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الْجُمُعَةِ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْوَلِيِّ الْحَمِيدِ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ و الْجُمُعَةُ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ إِلَّا عَلَى الصَّبِيِّ وَ الْمَرِيضِ وَ الْمَجْنُونِ وَ الشَّيْخِ الْكَبِيرِ وَ الْأَعْمَى وَ الْمُسَافِرِ وَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَ الْعَبْدِ الْمَمْلُوكِ وَ مَنْ كَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ فَرْسَخَيْنِ

Translation: Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said in a sermon: 'And Friday prayer is obligatory upon every believer...'

3 زُرَارَةَ بْن أَعْيَنَ عَن أَبِي جَعْفَر الْبَاقِر قَالَ:صَلَاةُ الْجُمُعَةِ فَرِيضَةٌ وَ الِاجْتِمَاعُ إِلَيْهَا فَرِيضَةٌ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَإِنْ تَرَكَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ ثَلَاثَ جُمَعٍ فَقَدْ تَرَكَ ثَلَاثَ فَرَائِضَ وَ لَا يَدَعُ ثَلَاثَ فَرَائِضَ مِنْ غَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ إِلَّا مُنَافِقٌ

Translation: Imam Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Friday prayer is obligatory, and gathering for it is obligatory in the presence of the Imam. So if a man leaves three Fridays without a valid reason, he has indeed left three obligations, and no one leaves three obligations without a valid reason except a hypocrite.'

4 أَبِي بَصِيرٍ و مُحَمَّدِ بْن مُسْلِمٍ قَالا سَمِعْنَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ يَقُولُ مَنْ تَرَكَ الْجُمُعَةَ ثَلَاثاً مُتَوَالِيَاتٍ بِغَيْرِ عِلَّةٍ طَبَعَ اللَّهُ قَلْبِهِ

📚 'Iqab al-A'mal, p. 276

Translation: Imam Al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever leaves three consecutive Friday prayers without a valid reason, Allah will put a seal on his heart.'

5 عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي حَدِيثٍ قَالَ: الْجُمُعَةُ وَاجِبَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ أَحَدٍ لَا يُعْذَرُ النَّاسُ فِيهَا إِلَّا خَمْسَةٌ الْمَرْأَةُ و الْمَمْلُوكُ و الْمُسَافِرُ و الْمَرِيضُ و الصَّبِيُّ

Translation: Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'Friday is obligatory upon everyone, and people have no excuse for not attending it except five: a woman, a slave, a traveler, a sick person, and a child.'

6 عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عَلَى مَنْ تَجِبُ الْجُمُعَةُ قَالَ تَجِبُ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ نَفَرٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ و لَا جُمُعَةَ لِأَقَلَّ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ أَحَدُهُمُ الْإِمَامُ فَإِذَا اجْتَمَعَ سَبْعَةٌ وَ لَمْ يَخَافُوا أَمَّهُمْ بَعْضُهُمْ وَ خَطَبَهُمْ

Zararah says: I said to Imam Al-Baqir (peace be upon him): 'Upon whom is Friday prayer obligatory?' He said: 'It is obligatory upon seven of the Muslims, and there is no Friday prayer for less than five people, one of whom is the Imam. And when seven people gather and there is no fear or danger, one of them leads them in prayer and gives them a sermon.'

7 زُرَارَةَ قَالَ:حَثَّنَا أَبُو عَبْداللَّهِ عَلَى صَلَاةِ الْجُمُعَةِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ أَنْ نَأْتِيَهُ فَقُلْتُ نَغْدُو عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ لَا إِنَّمَا عَنَيْتُ عِنْدَكُمْ

Zararah says: Imam Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) encouraged us to perform the Friday prayer to the extent that I thought he meant for us to come to him; so I said: 'We will come to you in the morning.' The Imam said: 'No, I meant among yourselves (to establish the Friday prayer).'

✅ Numerous hadiths indicate the obligation of Friday prayer, although its obligation has certain conditions, some of which were mentioned in the above narrations, including: the gathering of at least 7 people, the absence of fear or danger, the presence of a just Friday prayer leader who can give the sermon, a distance of two farsakhs from another Friday prayer, and so on.

If the conditions are met, various narrative evidences indicate the obligation of Friday prayer, some of which were mentioned.

✅ Based on the above narrations, with the gathering of 5 people and other conditions, it becomes permissible to perform the Friday prayer, and with the gathering of 7 people and the presence of other necessary conditions, it becomes obligatory.
