Abdullah ibn Fadalah said: 'I heard Imam Sadiq or Imam Baqir (peace be upon them) say:

When a boy reaches three years of age, tell him to say 'La ilaha illa Allah' seven times.

Then he is left until he completes three years, seven months, and twenty days, at which time he is told to say 'Muhammadun Rasul Allah' seven times.

Then he is left until he reaches four years of age, and at this time he is told to say: 'Salla Allahu ala Muhammadin wa ala alihi.'

Then he is left until he reaches five years of age, and at this time he is told: 'Which is your right hand? Which is your left hand?' If he knows and can do this, his face is turned towards the qiblah, and he is told: 'Prostrate.'

Then he is left until he reaches seven years of age. When he has completed seven years, he is told to wash his face and his two hands, and when he has washed them, he is told: 'Pray.'

Then he is left until he completes nine years. When he has completed nine years, he is taught 'wudu' (ablution) and is struck for it (if needed), and he is commanded to pray and is struck for it (if needed). When he has learned wudu and prayer, Allah Almighty forgives his parents.'
