Question 328: Is it forbidden to pray in a room that contains wine or intoxicating alcohol?
Answer
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 278
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Do not pray in a room where there is wine, nor in a room where there is an intoxicant, for the angels do not enter such a room. And do not pray in a garment that has been touched by wine or an intoxicant until it is washed.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 393
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The prayer is not to be performed in a room where there is wine or an intoxicant.
📚 Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 159
Translation: Sheikh Saduq narrated that Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Do not pray in a house where there is a dog, unless it is a hunting dog and it is kept in a closed area, in which case there is no problem. And indeed, the angels do not enter a room where there is a dog, nor a room where there is a picture or statue (of a living being), nor a room where there is a container in which urine is collected.
And prayer is not permissible in a room where wine or an intoxicant is contained in a sealed container.
✅ In the above narrations, the prohibition of praying in a place where there is wine or an intoxicant is clear, and if the alcohol in question is one of the intoxicating and inebriating types of alcohol, it falls under the above narrations.
✅ However, Sheikh Saduq narrated in 📚 Al-Muqni' that: It has been narrated that this act (i.e., praying in a room where there is wine and an intoxicant) is permissible, but Sheikh Saduq did not narrate its source, and it has not been found in other books either.
✅ Although praying in a room where there is wine and intoxicants is prohibited, if someone commits this prohibition and prays, no instruction has been received from the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, to repeat the prayer, and therefore, there is no need to repeat that prayer.
✅ Since ethanol alcohol is one of the intoxicants and, unfortunately, is present in some homes today under the pretext of disinfection, it is necessary to avoid praying in a room where it is kept in order to act upon the above hadiths.
