Question 319: What condemnation is there for speaking worldly matters in mosques?
Answer
✅Answer: Reflect on the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 356
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Sitting in the mosque in anticipation of prayer is worship as long as no impurity occurs from him. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, what impurity may occur from him? He replied: Backbiting.
📚 Bihar, vol. 74, p. 86
Translation: In the will of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him), Abu Dharr said: I said: May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah, how are the mosques of Allah to be cultivated? He replied: Voices are not raised in them, false speech and actions are not indulged in them, buying and selling is not done in them, and while you are in the mosque, avoid vain talk. If you do not, then on the Day of Resurrection never blame anyone but yourself.
O Abu Dharr, surely as long as you are sitting in the mosque, with every breath you take Allah grants you a degree in Paradise, and the angels send blessings upon you, and for every breath you take in the mosque He gives you ten good deeds and erases ten sins from you.
O Abu Dharr, every sitting in the mosque is vain except in three cases: the recitation of the prayer, remembrance of Allah, or questioning for knowledge.
📚 Hidayat al-Ummah, vol. 2, p. 187
Translation: Ali (peace be upon him) said: In the end of times, a people will come who go to the mosques and sit in circles; their mention is of the world and love of the world. Do not keep company with them, for Allah has no need of them.
Companionship
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 7, p. 263
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) saw a storyteller in the mosque, so he struck him with a whip and expelled him.
✅From the above narrations, it is clear that in mosques, backbiting, vain and useless talk, mentioning the world and love of the world, buying and selling, raising voices, storytelling and tale-telling, and indulging in falsehood are all condemned. God willing, we should avoid all these prohibitions.
