Question 2145: Can one seek forgiveness (Istighfar) for a living person as well?
Answer
Seeking Forgiveness
✅ Answer: Consider the following verses and hadiths:
Translation: We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by Allah's permission. And if they, when they had wronged themselves (and sinned), had come to you and asked forgiveness of Allah, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
📖 Surah An-Nisa, Verse 64
Translation: They (the sons of Jacob, peace be upon him) said: "O our father! Ask forgiveness for our sins, for indeed, we were wrongdoers!"
📖 Surah Yusuf, Verse 97
Translation: He (Abraham, peace be upon him, to Azar) said: "Peace be upon you! I will soon ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He has always been Gracious to me!"
📖 Surah Maryam, Verse 47
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, P. 181
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: When you meet one another, do so with greetings of peace (Salam) and handshakes, and when you intend to separate, do so by seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) for one another!
✅ In some hadiths, the practical way of doing this is that upon parting ways and saying farewell, they say to each other: "أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ لِی وَ لَکُمْ" (I seek Allah's forgiveness for myself and for you).
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, P. 529
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whatever you might abandon, do not abandon saying every morning and evening: 'O Allah! On this morning and on this day, I seek forgiveness and pardon for those who deserve Your mercy... O Allah! Forgive me and my parents, and have mercy upon them just as they brought me up when I was small!
O Allah! Forgive the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, both the living among them and the dead...!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 8, P. 175
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated this sermon from Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) on Friday: All praise belongs to the Lord Who is worthy of praise and the Owner of praise... up to where he said: 'O Allah! Forgive us and the believing men and believing women, both the living among them and the dead!'
✅ According to numerous verses of the Quran, of which a few examples were mentioned, and according to a vast number of hadiths, some of which were cited, seeking forgiveness and asking for pardon for others is not restricted to the deceased; rather, one can seek forgiveness and ask for pardon for the living (ahya) as well, and this matter is completely clear in the Quran and hadith.
