Question 2034: Can a woman prevent her menstruation (hayd) by taking pills and medication during Ramadan in order to fast the entire month?
Answer
✅ Answer: Note the following hadiths:
📚 Uyun Akhbar al-Rida, Vol. 2, p. 124
Imam Rida (peace be upon him) wrote in a letter to Ma'mun: A menstruating woman leaves the prayer and does not make it up, and she leaves the fast and makes it up!
✅ According to numerous hadiths, one of which was mentioned, a menstruating woman must refrain from fasting during her period and perform the missed fasts after Ramadan for the same number of days.
However, if a woman does not menstruate during Ramadan due to illness or taking medication/pills, it is clear that she must observe all her fasts.
✅ But it should be noted that no recommendation or virtue has been narrated in the hadiths for preventing menstruation with the intention of fasting the entire month, and it is not a desirable action.
✅ Generally, suppressing menstrual blood causes illness, and it is not appropriate for women to resort to something that the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them all) never recommended:
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 552
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said in his will to Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him): Restrain the bride in her first week [of marriage] from four things: dairy, vinegar, coriander, and sour/unripe apples!
Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) asked: Why should I prevent her from these four things? He said: Because the womb becomes sterile and cold from these four things regarding childbearing; and a mat in the corner of a house is better than a woman who does not bear children!
Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) then asked: O Messenger of Allah! Why is vinegar withheld from her? He said: When a woman menstruates while consuming vinegar, she is never fully purified. Coriander agitates her menses within her and makes childbirth difficult for her. And unripe apples cut off her menstruation, and consequently, it turns into a malady (pain/disease)!
✅ It is observed that suppressing menstrual blood in women causes it to turn into a malady; therefore, it is not appropriate for women to take medication and pills to cut off their menstruation just to observe all the fasts in Ramadan.
