Question 2010: Is it permissible to abandon one's occupation for the sake of pursuing religious studies, preaching, and oration?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

Isbat ibn Salim, a seller of Zutti (a type of fabric), said: One day, Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), while I was with him, asked about Mu'adh, the seller of linen (cloth). It was said that he had abandoned trade! The Imam said: 'This is an act of Satan! Whoever abandons trade, two-thirds of his intellect is lost! Does he not know that when a caravan came from Syria, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) bought from it and traded, and made a profit with which he paid his debt?'

Ibn Abbas said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) looked at someone and was pleased with him, he would ask: 'Does he have a job and occupation?' If they said: 'No,' he would say: 'He has fallen from my sight!'
He was asked: 'How so, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied: 'Because when a believer does not have a job and occupation, he lives off of his religion!'

9- From Al-Sakuni, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from his ancestors (peace be upon them) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: 'Seeking earning is an obligation after the obligatory duty.'
📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 103, p. 17
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: 'Seeking income is an obligation after the obligatory duty!'
✅ In light of the above narrations and dozens of others, abandoning an occupation is an act of Satan, leads to a reduction of the intellect, and the loss of two-thirds of the intellect. Not having a profession for seeking lawful provision is a cause for falling from the sight of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), and whoever abandons the world for the sake of the hereafter has been condemned by the Infallibles (peace be upon them).
It is clear that the Infallibles themselves (peace be upon them) had jobs, occupations, and trades, and they never recommended their knowledgeable companions (Fuqaha) to abandon work and earning for the sake of seeking knowledge and teaching. Furthermore, even if they abandoned work and earning due to great financial capability and lack of need, they would still face severe condemnation from the Ahl al-Bayt (the Family of the Prophet) (peace be upon them all).
Therefore, from the perspective of jurisprudence based on hadith and narration, abandoning one's occupation and trade for the sake of pursuing religious studies, teaching, preaching, and orating to the people has no justification, and severe condemnations have been reported for it. Thus, seeking knowledge and seeking lawful provision must both be done.
