Question 2050: From what age must women cover their hair in front of boys? And at what age must a girl cover her hair from non-mahram (unrelated) men?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 5, p. 533
Abdulrahman ibn Hajjaj said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about a girl who has not yet reached puberty. From what point is it appropriate for her to cover her hair from non-mahrams? And from what point is it obligatory for her to wear a headscarf (khimar) and cover her head for prayer? The Imam replied: She does not cover her head until prayer becomes forbidden to her (i.e., when she begins menstruation)!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 3, p. 436
Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said: A boy is instructed to pray at the age of seven, and a woman does not need to cover her hair from him until he experiences a wet dream (ihtilam).
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 170
Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said: A woman does not cover her head from a boy until he reaches puberty.
✅ Based on the above and other narrations, a woman is obligated to cover her hair from a boy once he reaches puberty and experiences ihtilam (nocturnal emission).
Similarly, once a girl begins menstruation and reaches puberty, it becomes obligatory for her to fully cover her hair from non-mahram men.
✅ Please also consider the following two narrations:
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 495
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When a boy reaches the age of maturity and puberty — which is at 13 lunar years and entering the 14th — everything that is obligatory on one who experiences ihtilam becomes obligatory on him, whether he has experienced ihtilam or not. Sins and good deeds are recorded for him, and all financial matters become permissible for him, unless he is weak-minded or foolish.
📚 Al-Khisal, p. 421, narration 17
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The age of puberty for a girl is 9 lunar years!
✅ Based on the above narrations, when a boy completes his 13th lunar year, all the religious obligations of a pubescent boy apply to him, even if he has not experienced ihtilam. Therefore, such a boy must avoid looking at the hair of non-mahram women.
Likewise, a girl who has completed her 9th lunar year is considered to have reached puberty, even if she has not menstruated, and therefore must fully cover her hair from non-mahram men.
