1⃣عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا قال: قال أَبُوعَبْداللَّه بَلَغَنی أَنَّ قَوْماً إِذَا زَارُوا الْحُسَیْنَ بْنَ عَلِیٍّ حَمَلُوا مَعَهُمُ السُّفَرَ فِیهَا الْحَلَاوَةُ وَ الْأَخْبِصَةُ وَ أَشْبَاهُهُ لَوْ زَارُوا قُبُورَ أَحِبَّائِهِمْ مَا حَمَلُوا ذَلِکَ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: I have been informed that some people, when setting out for the pilgrimage to Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), take with them spreads filled with sweets, different types of halwa, and similar foods! Yet, when visiting the graves of their own friends, they don’t bring such things with them!

2⃣عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قال: قال أَبُوعَبْداللَّه تَزُورُونَ خَیْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ لَا تَزُورُونَ وَ لَا تَزُورُونَ خَیْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَزُورُونَ قُلْتُ قَطَعْتَ ظَهْرِی قَالَ تَاللَّهِ إِنَّ أَحَدَکُمْ لَیَذْهَبُ إِلَی قَبْرِ أَبِیهِ کَئِیباً حَزِیناً وَ تَأْتُونَهُ أَنْتُمْ بِالسُّفَرِ کَلَّا حَتَّی تَأْتُونَهُ شُعْثاً غُبْراً.

Mufaddal said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: If you visit, it's better than not visiting, and if you do not visit, it's better than going to visit! I said: You've left me confused! The Imam replied: By Allah, when one of you visits his father's grave, he goes in sorrow and grief, while you go to visit Hussain (peace be upon him) with feasting and food! Never! You must go with messy hair and covered in dust!

3⃣عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قال: یَأْتُونَ قَبْرَ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَیَتَّخِذُونَ سُفَراً أَمَا إِنَّهُمْ لَوْ أَتَوْا قُبُورَ آبَائِهِمْ وَ أُمَّهَاتِهِمْ لَمْ یَفْعَلُوا ذَلِکَ قُلْتُ فَأَیَّ شَیْءٍ یَأْکُلُونَ قَالَ الْخُبْزَ وَ اللَّبَنَ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: They come to the grave of Abu Abdullah al-Hussain (peace be upon him) with food spreads! Know that if they were visiting the graves of their own parents, they would not do such a thing! I asked: Then what should they eat? He replied: Bread and milk!

4⃣عن مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ عَنِ الثُّمَالِیِّ قَالَ قَالَ الصَّادِقُ علیه السلام: إِذَا أَرَدْتَ الْمَسِیرَ إِلَی قَبْرِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ علیهما السلام فَصُمْ یَوْمَ الْأَرْبِعَاءِ وَ الْخَمِیسِ وَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ الْخُرُوجَ فَاجْمَعْ أَهْلَکَ وَ وُلْدَکَ وَ ادْعُ بِدُعَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَ اغْتَسِلْ قَبْلَ خُرُوجِکَ...

وَ لَا تَدَّهِنْ وَ لَا تَکْتَحِلْ حَتَّی تَأْتِیَ الْفُرَاتَ وَ أَقِلَّ مِنَ الْکَلَامِ وَ الْمِزَاحِ وَ أَکْثِرْ مِنْ ذِکْرِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَی وَ إِیَّاکَ وَ الْمِزَاحَ و الْخُصُومَةَ...

ثُمَّ تَأْتِی النَّیْنَوَی فَتَضَعُ رَحْلَکَ بِهَا وَ لَا تَدَّهِنْ وَ لَا تَکْتَحِلْ وَ لَا تَأْکُلِ اللَّحْمَ مَا دُمْتَ مُقِیماً بِهَا...

📚 Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 226

Thumali narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) who said: When you intend to travel toward Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), then fast on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. When you are about to depart, gather your family and children, recite the travel supplication, and perform ghusl (ritual bathing) before leaving...

Until he said: Do not apply oil to your body, do not use kohl, until you reach the Euphrates. Speak little, avoid joking, and remember Allah often. Refrain from joking, arguments, and disputes...

Until he said:

Then go to Naynawa, place your belongings there, and as long as you stay there (i.e., in Naynawa, which is Karbala), do not oil your body, do not use kohl, and do not eat meat...

5⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), in a narration on the etiquette of visiting Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), said: When you intend to go to him, perform ghusl, do not use perfume, do not apply oil, and do not use kohl until you reach the grave...!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 6, p. 76

✅ The above narrations show that one of the etiquettes of visiting Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) is not to take food spreads, sweets, and halwa. The visitor should go in sorrow, with messy hair, and covered in dust. While staying in Karbala, one should avoid eating meat, applying kohl, oiling the body, using perfume, and joking.

Even though it cannot be claimed that observing these etiquettes is obligatory, their importance is such that in narration 2⃣ the Imam says: If you want to visit in that way (with food and feasting), it is better not to go!
