✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:

1⃣عَنْ إِسْمَاعِیلَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْأَشْعَرِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَی الْمَیِّتِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا الْمُؤْمِنُ فَخَمْسُ تَکْبِیرَاتٍ وَ أَمَّا الْمُنَافِقُ فَأَرْبَعٌ وَ لَا سَلَامَ فِیهَا.

Ismail says: I asked Imam Reza, peace be upon him, about the prayer for the deceased. The Imam said: For a believer, it is five takbirs, and for a hypocrite, it is four takbirs! And there is no salam in it!

2⃣عَنْ سُلَیْمَانَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْجَعْفَرِیِّ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَکَ وَ تَعَالَی فَرَضَ الصَّلَاةَ خَمْساً وَ جَعَلَ لِلْمَیِّتِ مِنْ کُلِّ صَلَاةٍ تَکْبِیرَةً.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has made prayer consist of five obligatory prayers, and for the deceased, He has designated one takbir for each prayer!

3⃣عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ فِی حَدِیثِ شَرَائِعِ الدِّینِ قَالَ: وَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَی الْمَیِّتِ خَمْسُ تَکْبِیرَاتٍ فَمَنْ نَقَصَ مِنْهَا فَقَدْ خَالَفَ السُّنَّةَ.

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The prayer over a corpse consists of five takbirs. Whoever performs it incompletely has surely opposed the Sunnah!

4⃣عَنْ زَیْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّه عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَی الْجَنَائِزِ إِذَا فَاتَ الرَّجُلَ مِنْهَا التَّکْبِیرَةُ أَوِ الثِّنْتَانِ أَوِ الثَّلَاثُ قَالَ یُکَبِّرُ مَا فَاتَهُ.

Zaid Shisham says: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about the prayer for the deceased if one, two, or three takbirs are missed by a person. The Imam said: They should say the takbirs that were missed!

5⃣عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ أَ رَأَیْتَ إِنْ فَاتَتْنِی تَکْبِیرَةٌ أَوْ أَکْثَرُ قَالَ تَقْضِی مَا فَاتَکَ قُلْتُ أَسْتَقْبِلُ الْقِبْلَةَ قَالَ بَلَی وَ أَنْتَ تَتْبَعُ الْجَنَازَةَ الْحَدِیثَ.

Jabir says: I said to Imam Baqir, peace be upon him: Tell me, if one takbir or more is missed by me (in the funeral prayer), what should I do? The Imam said: You make up what you missed! I said: Should I face the qibla? He said: Yes! In the same state as you follow the corpse!

6⃣عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَادٍّ الْقَلَانِسِیِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ یَقُولُ فِی الرَّجُلِ یُدْرِکُ مَعَ الْإِمَامَ فِی الْجِنَازَةِ تَکْبِیرَةً أَوْ تَکْبِیرَتَیْنِ فَقَالَ یُتِمُّ التَّکْبِیرَ وَ هُوَ یَمْشِی مَعَهَا فَإِذَا لَمْ یُدْرِکِ التَّکْبِیرَ کَبَّرَ عِنْدَ الْقَبْرِ فَإِنْ کَانَ أَدْرَکَهُمْ وَ قَدْ دُفِنَ کَبَّرَ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ.

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 3, p. 200

A man says: I heard Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, say about a person who catches only one or two takbirs with the imam in the funeral prayer: They complete the takbirs while moving with the corpse. If they did not catch the takbirs, they say them at the grave. And if they reach the grave after the burial, they say the takbirs over the grave!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the takbirs for the funeral prayer in Shia practice are five. If one or more takbirs are missed, they must be made up. If the corpse has been taken away, they are said while following the corpse. If the corpse is at the grave, the missed takbirs are said there. And if the deceased has been buried, the missed takbirs are said over the grave.

✅ If the imam of the congregation forgets one takbir in the funeral prayer, no narration indicates the necessity of repeating the funeral prayer, especially if the deceased has been buried. In such a case, the above narrations are followed, and the forgotten takbir is made up by the imam and the followers during the procession, when the deceased is placed at the grave, or after burial, to complete the five takbirs.

✅ Facing the qibla is necessary when making up the missed takbirs.
