Question 1999: If someone's body or clothing comes into contact with a wet cat, can they pray in that state?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 225
Fadl said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the remnants (leftovers) of a cat, sheep, cow, camel, donkey, horse, mule, wild animals, and predators—I left nothing out. The Imam said: There is no problem! Until I asked about the dog. The Imam said: It is impure and najis!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 58
Malik Jahni said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about substances that come out of the nostrils of living beings and touch me. The Imam said: There is no problem!
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 93
Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about a person who strokes the back of a cat—can he pray before washing his hand? The Imam said: There is no problem!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 61
Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about a person whose clothing comes into contact with a pig, and he does not wash it but remembers during prayer. The Imam said: If he has already started the prayer, he should continue; but if he has not yet started, he should pour water over it—unless there is a visible trace, in which case it must be washed!
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, contact with any living animal does not require washing, and one can pray in that state—except for dogs and pigs, which are inherently impure (najis al-'ayn). If the body or clothing comes into contact with these animals while there is moisture, washing is required, and one cannot pray in that state.
Therefore, if someone's body or clothing touches a living cat, washing is not required, and they can pray, even if the cat's body or their own clothing and body were wet at the time of contact.
✅ Important Note: The presence of urine, feces, semen, or body parts of animals such as hair, wool, fur, skin, etc., on a person's clothing has separate rulings. For details, refer to this link:
